Orange Line riders have reason to fret; dead train means they get to sweat and sweat

The T reports the Orange Line came to a bit of a halt at rush hour and now has delays of up to 30 minutes because an inbound train sighed its last and died at Tufts. Caitlin reports she was stuck on that train:

Friend of mine just texted me from this shitshow. 30+ minutes, packed out platform and hardly anyone wearing masks. She tells me when informing a T official about the mask issue, she replied "Stop crying."

This is a miserable enough situation as it is, but when almost nobody is wearing masks, especially when we're in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, that makes an already horrific situation a hell of a lot worse!

And by ignorance I mean that, well, when's the last time you've been on the T? Yes, nobody was wearing masks that last time, but then again the CDC was specifically telling us not to wear masks.

The T is the one place in Boston where nearly everybody is wearing a mask. I ride frequently and I’d say compliance is well over 90%. A little lower if you don’t count the idiots who don’t cover their nose.

It's very good at morning rush hour. A little less in the evening. Godawful after a big event (I've been on the train with post-Fenway crowds a couple times)

Middays, evenings around 6, sometimes later. I haven’t experienced a post-Fenway crowd. Usually I ride the Orange Line and buses.

I’d think the Red Line would be at least as compliant as the Orange Line. Maybe they take their masks off and cough on you when they hear the way you talk.

Our taxpayer dollars are already paying the majority of the fare/costs.

There are cities and systems around the world already doing system wide free fares... ridership goes up, car driving,,(also subsidized by tax dollars) goes down (as does pollution).

I also don't think the T's BILLION dollar fare collection system makes any sense & it will require a team of fare monitors (not the already hired, and 'exhausted' T "police") to check to see if we're paying.

Reducing fares to zero isn't going to get a lot of people out of cars -- because the T is already cheaper than driving or going by cab/rideshare in virtually all situations. People who can afford to pay more eschew the T because it is often slow, unreliable, and inconvenient. This story is a case in point of the T's unreliability!

Covid blew an enormous hole in the T's budget precisely because ridership dropped to near zero. A zero-fare T would require an additional annual subsidy of probably three-quarters of a billion dollars and that money has to come from somewhere.

That response to a complaint about being stuck on a platform full of heavy, unmasked people was absolutely unacceptable--and a disgrace. The T Official who responded that way needs to be disciplined, and fired, if he or she keeps behaving so disgracefully.
