The Charlesgate Alliance reports on the eruption of a sinkhole in Charlesgate at the Muddy River, apparently over the past weekend.
DCR sent workers to the scene on Monday to erect a fence around the whole as experts determine what to do about it.
Please respect the fences and do not get near the hole.
t was also reported that some water was seen inside of the hole, which Mauney-Brodek said might have something to do with the adjacent Muddy River, but she doesn’t “want to hypothesize,” as not much is known yet.
Last month, a sinkhole appeared in Ronan Park in Dorchester; city officials determined it was an old well.

Magoo sez

Magoo has never told any one this. Many moons ago Magoo was strolling through the woods and came across a sink hole. Magoo peered in and was sucked into the magical fae realm inhabited by fairies of terrifying power. They would not let Magoo leave. Thus Magoo lived a lifetime in the fae realm and had a love and fae children. Finally on Magoo’s deathbed the fae released Magoo. Magoo found Magoo’s self back at the very spot and time when Magoo was first sucked into the fae realm. Many may not believe Magoo’s story but Magoo speaks from the heart of this life and the heart of his life with the fae. Magoo.

This is why DCR puts fences around their sinkholes.

Do sinkholes actually "erupt"?
Most verbs used for it are positive-action or positive-presence or constructive words - erupt, form, appear.. - trying to illustrate the occurrence of a literal and figurative void.

That is my understanding of how sinkholes work, although I don't know if geologists would use that word. First there's a cavity underground for some reason or another, and then the cavity gradually erodes the ground above it until it bursts forth onto the surface, which is what eruption means.
A cavity bursts forth?

It brings to mind a story I heard of the sports page headline when the great baseball pitcher Dizzy Dean got hit in the head:
