Citizen complaint of the day: Old news boxes never die, they just fill up with trash

Old abandoned news box

A concerned citizen files a 311 complaint about old news boxes on Dartmouth Street outside Back Bay station.

This gets filled up with trash and looks like trash. I think there are at least two of them outside Back Bay station. Would be great to throw out and would be very simple.

I'm imagining this person checking every day to see if there's a new Phoenix and being disappointed every time when it's just trash again.

I know that the Bay State Banner and Somerville Times still distribute this way. Which others?

How much are those publishers paying us for the use of our real estate to locate their distribution boxes? I don’t know what the rent ought to be, but I’m pretty sure $0.00 isn’t the right answer.

They're probably paying the same amount as thousands of other residents who store their own metal boxes -- that are 100 times bigger -- on miles of public real estate.

And honestly, this is like the "excise tax on cyclists" argument. It's a solution in search of a problem, and would cost more in administrative costs than it would bring in.

has managed to hang around years after the publication folded. Those boxes were red.

Vision Times @Ron Newman. It's a Falun Gong-affiliated Chinese language weekly newspaper. The copies in Forest Hills are in English.

Still a worthless rag.
