Four residents injured in fire on Deering Road in Mattapan

Deering Road fire

The Boston Fire Department reports two adults and two children had to be taken to a local hospital from a fire at 115 Deering Rd. in Mattapan this morning.

The department reports firefighters responded shortly after 10 p.m. to a fire that consumed the house's rear porches and attic.

A total of 17 people were made homeless by the fire, the department says, adding the cause is under investigation.

I seem to have memory of reading someplace that there has been an increase in possible arson in parts of Mattapan and Dorchester. The writer made associations with well-established arsons that occurred in the 60s and 70s to the benefit of developers.

So many of these fires are starting on rear porches. Can we determine if these were careless disposal of smoking materials, back-porch illegal barbecues, or something else? Or are the fire department investigators still unable to determine a causation? Have any been ruled likely arson?

The number of "rear porch extended to building" fires seems to be happening far-more than normal, or so it seems. Many of these seem to be in neighborhoods where building is desirable. Same thing happened in the 60s and 70s.
