Non-profit grocery chain shutting its Mattapan store

The Dorchester Reporter reports Daily Table is closing its store on River Street in Mattapan Square on Sunday, says it just wasn't drawing enough business. Other Daily Table stores, including the original one in Codman Square, will remain open.

Good morning Mattapan Community,

Today, our office received news that Daily Table in Mattapan Square will close its location on January 5th. This is devastating news as we know the crucial role Daily Table plays in the lives of many residents, providing groceries at a more affordable price than other stores. Due to Daily Table being a non-profit, a lot of its funding comes from grants. One of them is a federal SNAP grant that unfortunately was not extended for FY25.

Our office is going to work closely with the City to ensure that another POSITIVE business is brought to our community. I will keep you all in the loop as conversations continue about the future of this space.

Hard not to notice that a well intended tenant that all the politicians advocated for failed while another building not far away also sits vacant where Taco Bell was driven away by electeds and loud voices claiming to represent the neighborhood. Maybe electeds and activists should let owners lease to whomever they want and we would have successful businesses in these storefronts rather than playing some sort of real life game of Monopoly where those claiming to rep the community insist on choosing who goes where.

I am an occasional customer at the Codman Square location, and these food stores are a neighborhood treasure. If as mentioned in the article the Mattapan store shows sales 70% lower than the other locations, the closing is quite unfortunate but seems like the right call in order to keep the other stores afloat.
