Mary Ellen spotted a snow bunting in the snow at Millennium Park in West Roxbury this morning. For buntings, Massachusetts is where they fly south; as spring approaches, they'll fly back to the northernmost reaches of Canada and Greenland to breed.

Mary Ellen spotting?

A couple of months ago I was walking in Millennium Park and spotted a woman with a very impressive camera. The lens was like two feet long. Could that have been the very Mary Ellen who provides these beautiful photographs that appear on this site?
Did she have a cute dog with her?

If so, might've been her.

So asnuggable until wittle burdy goes kookoo and pecks out Magoo’s eyes. Magoo’s response would be like “no wittle cutey burdy don’t peck Magoo’s eyes out.” Magoo.
Timely!

That solved my mystery bird sighting from yesterday's walk! They're fun little birds and I can't recall seeing any around my necks of the woods in years past.
Thanks, as always, for highlighting Mary Ellen's excellent photography.

It might be a small bird, but if Massachusetts is where you go to sit out winter weather, you're inherently pretty hardcore.

Read the Audubon article on them (click on "snow bunting" in the post): They nest among rocks on the ground up above the Arctic Circle. Even with insulating fluffiness, that takes a lot of body heat, so Mr. Bunting has to not just forage for food, but keep Ms. Bunting fed every 15 minutes while she's nesting.
Thank you, Mary Ellen
