State senator wants to make Boston take federal anti-terrorism grants

The State House News Service reports that State Sen. Nick Collins of South Boston has teamed up with a Worcester County Republican to file legislation that would bar cities and towns from deciding whether to accept federal public-safety grants, after the Boston City Council rejected a $13.3-million Homeland Security grant.

Collins raised the specter of bomb threats to synagogues, the Marathon bombings and 9/11. Councilors who voted against the grant said they wanted to first ensure the grants would not be used to harm the city's minority residents.

If we fail to snatch every opportunity to militarize the police and widen their surveillance of the population, the terrorists win!

In principle, I don't like the idea of state government intervening, but there was no good reason to turn down the grant.

I agree - dumb

But I prefer your principle - let government be as local as it can be. Subsidiarity.

More police can raid our schools in search of naughty books

I find it whack that Ed Flynn supports diluting his own power. I get that this is a grant intended for multi city (Cambridge and Somerville too) with Boston considered the fiduciary. The vote is the vote, and he must abide by it, but running to his neighbor Collins for help is so baldface old school Boston and offensive. Timing also could not be worse, as the BCC is just about to turn over to a new term and new councilors.

If the city council geniunely wants to stop the city from harming the city's minority residents they can dedicate alot more effort to improving the Boston Public Schools. And they can start by supporting money being set aside to repair and upgrade each of the schools ASAP as well as find a replacement funding source for the Esser funds which are not available next school year by design.

Too smart to run for mayor, but will still try to stuff the feds down his residents’ throat. Also a noted bootlicker.
