A whale of a time downtown

Whale sculpture in Downtown Crossing

Boston Pilot had a bird's eye view of construction of artist Mathias Gmachl's "Echoes - A Voice from Uncharted Waters," which is an 11,000-pound, 56-foot long statue that asks us to ponder our affect on nature and the environment, at the Downtown Crossing Steps at Washington and Franklin streets.

Echoes is the first of a series of sculptures to be installed by mid-January as part of a Downtown Boston Business Improvement District public-art show that will then run through March.

Both DTX and Faneuil Mall are failed malls, like thousands of others across the country. Having art exhibitions or music are temporary fixes until a more permanent solution is found.

Both need either people working nearby or HOUSING.

Not enough are willing to leave their home office/dens to go downtown.

Even if you assume every single one of the Millennium Tower condos is empty because they're all owned by foreign investors, there are now enough people living downtown to support both a supermarket and a neighborhood association.

but it does not appear to be happening, unfortunately.

Millennium Towers are nice but we need lots, and lots and lots more middle class, working class, low income, moderate income, with kids, without kids, HOUSING!!

If it doesn't get done,

think of all the Dunks that will close.
