Kenyan to be arraigned tomorrow on charges he killed his girlfriend and left her body in a car at Logan before fleeing the country
Kevin Kangethe, 42, who allegedly stabbed girlfriend Margaret Mbitu to death, left her jacket-covered body in the front seat of his Toyota Venza at Logan Central Parking, then fled to Kenya in November, was flown back to Boston today to face arraignment on a murder charge in Suffolk Superior Court tomorrow, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
Kenyan police found and arrested Kangethe in January at a nightclub in an upscale Nairobi neighborhood, but before he could be extradited to the US, he escaped from a police lockup. He was arrested a few days later at a cousin's house after being turned in by his own family members.
Like Kangethe, who formerly lived in Lowell, Mbitu was born in Kenya. She made a life here with her family, living in Whitman and working as a nurse. Co-workers reported her missing in late October, after she failed to show up for work.
In a statement, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said:
I am deeply grateful for all of the state, federal and Kenyan authorities who have worked so diligently to return Kevin Kangethe to Boston. I am particularly grateful that Maggie Mbitu’s family and friends will finally see the man charge with her death appear in court.
Innocent, etc.

Justice. I thought he had for
Justice. I thought he had for sure escaped it completely. Escapes the US, escapes a Kenyan jail. I hope that for the last ten months he felt nothing but the fear of being caught
