He was a good man and then some.
RIP
A hero to me and...
...my 96 year old father.
sigh
I knew the odds were against it, but I really wanted Jimmy Carter to be able to decline to attend Trump's funeral.
The good don't always die young, but they seem to die first.
good innings
He made it to 100 AND outlived Kissinger. As much as I'd love for him to be the Immortal St Jimmy, he's had a good run. It's just a shame he didn't outlive certain other elderly monsters.
Jimmy Carter
He was the first person I voted for for president when I was 18. Despite today's revisionist history, at the time people were actually quite optimistic at the prospect of his presidency. I registered to vote in one of the "little city halls" that had been set up all over the city by Kevin White. Anybody remember those?
Little city halls
I remember those. Mayor White was a very involved mayor. He tried to make Boston a better city.
Little City Hall
I remember one being set up in Field's Corner playground, IIRC.
I remember when my mom
I remember when my mom brought me and my uncle to see Jimmy Carter speak in Daley Plaza. There was a little bit of a distraction when fireworks landed in the crowd and burned a big hole in the bottom of my mom’s coat. In spite of that, to someone knee high to a grasshopper that was magical, surreal to be at a rally.
I have always saw President Carter as a moral role model, over recent years have to reconcile the role he played in normalizing antisemitism in legitimizing attacking Israel.
Good lord
Above all things, Carter valued human rights.
You might dig a little deeper on that last bit with that in mind.
You are the anti-semite
Jews are not just Israelis and Israel is not just jews and by equating the two you are being, yes, anti-semitic.
And I'd suggest you keep your foolish mouth shut about Jimmy Carter. The man spent decades working for peace in the middle east, even earning a Nobel Peace Prize. When, after working on the issue in good faith for so many years, Carter came to opinion that Israel is a huge contributor to the problem and practices "apartheid," his opinion has way more value then you, an overly verbose right-wing christian shill without the courage of his convictions.
Middle east aside
As President, he was not a progressive or liberal in the way these ideologies is generally consider in America today. Even in his time, groups on the left didn't love him.
If he was running for office today, he'd be far too conservative and religious for most democratic voters and toxic to progressives.
He was a good man and wanted peace and prosperity for everyone and overall he was a successful president who had unlucky timing.
Still, people should remember that policy wise, he'd be a republican if running for election today.
Carter was and is not a republican
It's true that he was a complicated man with complicated policies, but his views at the time would not be compatible with 2024 republicans on a whole host of issues that matter. He was not a racist xenophobe who demonized immigrants. He campaigned on human rights, calling out the vicious right wing dictators in Central America like Somoza, and was willing to negotiate with the Sandinistas early on, something actual republicans of the time like Reagan quickly backed away from. He would not gut the federal government, destroy the environment and give away public goods, cut social social security or other public services or appoint unqualified justices bent on destroying constitutional law and enabling an American dictatorship. He would not become a toady to right-wing billionaires to win an election.
So no, he would not be running as a republican.
Parties change
Carter ran on a platform of government privatization and shrinking the number of bureaucratic agencies. 1976 Carter is closer to a Romney republican than a Elizabeth Warren democrat.
He certainly wouldn't be a Trump worshiper but he wouldn't get far in the democratic party either.
I'm not saying this critically toward Carter, BTW. I wish there was more politicians like him.
Parties and the Country Changes
And both Governors George and Mitt Romney are closer to a Warren democrat than a project 2025 republican.
Carter stood for human rights (abroad and equal rights locally), protecting the environment and stood against government corruption, specifically the overreaches of executive power perpetrated by the Nixon administration. It's not close as to what party Carter would be a member of today. If he won the governorship of Georgia he most certainly WOULD get far in the democratic party of today.
It took him a long time to humanize…
…. his views on abortion. But he would in no way be accepted by nor would he likely want to be accepted into the Republican Party.
Especially the present day Republican Party.
Just his policies on getting off our reliance on oil alone would negate any chance of that.
Rest well, Mr President..

The 1970's were a long time ago
1970 was 55 years ago. We're getting to the point where not many people have strong personal memories about adult life in that decade.
Carter
Anyone remember shy high interest rates, hostage crisis, put on a sweater? A well intentioned guy but as big lionized in his passing. Have you committed adultery in your heart? So good president he lasted one term. God bless him. He would be scary today, Sunday School teacher. He would be horrified how the Government to rips off those who they tax.
