Somebody lost their head in Downtown Crossing
By adamg on Wed, 01/10/2024 - 3:09pm
Walking down Washington Street this morning, Antonio Caban couldn't help but notice the giant head wedged into the alley (technically, Harlem Place) next to where Felt used to be.
"Boston, what is going on here?" he naturally wondered.

Felt
It's been closed for years, maybe more than a decade. Are there any plans for that building? Maybe someone should bring back the Adams House restaurant.
Nine years ago ...
A developer proposed a 30-story residential building, but nothing ever came of it.

Giant Clown Head: What? I ain't doin' nothin'! (whistles circus tune)
That is cool!
It should stay there as public art.
Explaination?
Has anybody found out why this unusual object was there?
Boston.com knows
They say it's an art project sponsored by the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District
I'm so old...
How old are you?
I'm so old I would have said the clown head was in the alley between the pinball arcade and the Modern theater.
I'll see myself out...
Ah, yes, the arcade on Washington Street...
That arcade was right across the street from what was then De Lafayette Place, and it was pretty honky-tonk when I went there (mainly video games and pinball machines, with the odd skee-ball machine). I think it closed in the late 1990s-early 2000s when they redeveloped the block for new apartments.
Lafayette place was F-A-N-C-Y
Lafayette place was F-A-N-C-Y to me ask a young teenager!
The 1970s
That arcade predates the doomed Lafayette Place and it predates video games. When I used to go there in the 70s it still had the old analog pinball machines with actual bells that rang and numbers on a manual loop. And it was pretty honky-tonk back then too. The Combat Zone was in full bloom.
Nah - don't see yourself out.

If you're that old, you might be eligible for paratransit service - the RIDE driver is obligated to come to the building door to meet you and walk with you to the vehicle.
