Those trains don't make a lot of noise when approaching, they can sneak up on you, even though you'd think these people could just have stepped out of the way.

...the engineer would almost certainly be sounding his horn as the train approached the people on the tracks, and those horns are loud enough to be heard a mile or more away.

Multiple witnesses reported a woman was near the tracks when a man on a bike attempted to help her.

An unnamed witness described the scene.

"He picked up her backpack, she had fallen down, he was trying to pick her up, and then all of the sudden, the train was stopped, and they were both deceased," the witness said.
