Boston Police alert us that they, BFD, Boston EMS and mall security will conduct "a full scale training exercise" at the South Bay Mall at 5 a.m. on Sunday and so you shouldn't be alarmed at what you might see or hear should you pass by the mall then - or hear alarming calls on the local scanner channels.

A man on a stolen scooter packing a gun full of ammunition tried to ram one of the cops who had pulled him over on a Dorchester sidewalk early this morning, only to have the officer step aside at the last minute, sending the guy and his passenger flying onto the asphalt after the scooter jumped the curb and spun out of control, police say. The MBTA reports the latest extended Braintree shutdown and a briefer Ashmont closure let workers lift 37 slow zones across 18 miles of track - getting the Red Line up to such speed it's shaved 10 minutes off the duration of a one-way trip between Braintree and downtown Boston over last month. A developer has filed plans for a six-story, 59-unit apartment building at 101-109 Boston St., right next door to the prominent Fortress self-storage building with the giant inflatable lock off I-93 near South Bay Mall. Read more.

The MBTA announced today the Ashmont branch of the Red Line will be closed on Saturday so workers can remove one of those slow zones - and to make sure there aren't any potential problems left over from the Peabody Square lake that formed last week after a National Grid crew cracked open a BWSC water main there.

Trains will be replaced by shuttle buses - like for the previously announced shutdown of the Braintree branch - which will remain closed on Sunday.

CommonWealth Beacon considers the decision by Sean O’Brien, a Medford native who worked his way up from Teamsters Local 25 in Charlestown to become president of the national union, not to have the union make an endorsement in this year's presidential election. It notes that a number of Teamsters locals have endorsed Harris, including Local 122 in Dorchester.

Update, Tuesday a.m.: The MBTA rolled out shuttle buses to replace Ashmont Red Line service after the water disrupted power to the trains.

A National Grid crew working in the street at Dorchester Avenue at Ashmont Street in Dorchester around 6 p.m., struck a Boston Water and Sewer Commission main, turning Peabody Square into an impassible lake and forcing firefighters to evacuate at least one building after they started smelling a strong odor of gas. Boston firefighters responding to a medical call found a man stabbed in the chest and stomach at the Charles Street entrance to the Fields Corner MBTA stop in Dorchester around 8:05 p.m. on Sunday. He was taken to a local hospital with injuries not considered life threatening.

It's the second stabbing near the station in less than a week.

Boston Police report arresting two 15-year-olds they say used loaded guns in "an argument over a scooter" that included pointing the weapons at a third teen and then having him driven a mile away to be dumped out, without the scooter, yesterday afternoon. Read more.

WFXT reports four students from the Mason Elementary School in Roxbury and an adult were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries after a school-bus crash on Southampton Street shortly before 3 p.m. on Thursday.

A Dorchester 17-year-old was ordered held without bail at his arraignment today on charges he participated in murdering Leudis Mejia Sanchez, 49, and injuring a second man during a home invasion at an apartment at 5 Trent St. in Dorchester on Aug. 12, according to Dorchester Municipal Court records.
