City's new ads urging bicyclists to wear helmets are like a 2x4 to the face

Have you seen the new Boston Public Health Commission ads with the guy with the blood-drenched face? Boston Biker has, and is not amused:

Helmets are good, and people should wear them. But showing a kid who looks like someone took a bat to his face is not going to get more people to ride their bike, and I think we would all be better off if more people rode their bikes, with or without helmets.

The Atlantic Cities picks up on the theme, says European cities where few wear helmets are safer for bicyclists simply because there are so many of them.

Statue locked up in shuttered Green Line entrance gets new life on college campus

MBTA photoMBTA photo.Forty years ago, artist Dennis Kowal loaned the MBTA his "Constellations" statue for installation at the Hynes Green Line station.

The T installed it along the walkway to the Boylston Street entrance, where it's gone largely unnoticed in recent years, since the T's locked that entrance up. T spokesman Joe Pesaturo reports:

Therefore, the artist contacted the MBTA in his efforts to locate a new venue. When the artist found the new location at Wentworth, the MBTA agreed that this was in the best interest of the artist and the artwork. T personnel helped to ensure the sculpture was safely moved.

There's an official dedication at Wentworth on Saturday.

DA: Young teen had help in attacking man he stabbed to death, used T stop to escape, left key behind

Ernest Watkins IV was arraigned today on charges he stabbed a man to death outside the Fields Corner T stop last week. Watkins is 14.

Watkins was among a group of four people spotted attacking Cherby LaJoie around 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 6, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. MBTA surveillance footage shows the four entered the T stop - one jumping a gate after his CharlieCard wouldn't work - then fled out an emergency exit, the DA's office says.

LaJoie died from multiple stab wounds to the head and chest, the DA's office reports, adding that police recovered a key on a shoelace near LaJoie's body.

Prosecutors say that in addition to a trail of blood, investigators followed tips from witnesses and MBTA CharlieCard records, which led them to somebody who gave up the kid's name.

According to the DA's office, police went to his Dorchester home Saturday and, among other things, tried the key they recovered in his door. It worked.

Watkins was then put under arrest, his name to become available under a state law that mandates juveniles be tried in adult court in murder cases.

The DA's office says the investigation is ongoing and that additional people could face charges.

Innocent, etc.
