The black hole that is the Green Line

Over on Bad Transit, Tim reports it took him two hours and 15 minutes to get from Malden to Newton via Orange Line and a cavalcade of shuttle buses that seems to pass for D-Line service most weekends these days:

I gave myself two hours for a one-hour trip, and STILL ended up being late for work.

Then there's the feces-smelling spilled popcorn all over the stairwell to the outbound Orange Line at Downtown Crossing the next morning ...

Losing an act

Marc notes the imminent passing of ImprovBoston's Walsh Brothers, soon to depart for some godforsaken place:

Go to the Great and Secret Comedy Show as soon as possible. The Walsh brothers, the amiable hosts of the late-night ImprovBoston show, may soon leave for bigger things in Hollywood or New York. No more free shows. No more free beer. Worst of all, no more Walsh brothers — no more of the amazing alchemy that makes a couple of Charlestown underachievers standing around on stage so astonishingly funny and winning. ...

Patriots: A win is a win

Firestarter reviews the Patriots victory:

... This is not the team that won the superbowl last year, this is the team that won the year before-after just barely scraping by all season. Not a complaint about the win per se-my feeling is if they do it they do it, and that's what is most important. It's just frustrating to see good opportunities wasted. ...

Governor as stand-up comedian

The Red Speck's ongoing bashing of Massachusetts makes the national press:

BOSTON -- Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, exploring a possible presidential run in 2008, has a message for his fellow Republicans.

Take my state. Please!

"Being a conservative Republican in Massachusetts," he told a GOP audience in South Carolina, "is a bit like being a cattle rancher at a vegetarian convention."

Bada-bing. ...

Bullet voting

Tomorrow's the city-council preliminary election, in which voters get to narrow the number of at-large candidates from 15 to 8 for the November general election.

You can vote for up to four at-large candidates. Larry discusses the pros and cons of bullet voting - in which you try to make a strategic decision to vote for only one or two candidates:

... So, to bullet-vote or not? The choice depends entirely on which scenario you think is more probable. If the race for fourth place is between your two favorite candidates, you should bullet-vote. If the race for fourth place is between your second choice and someone you strongly dislike, you should not bullet-vote. ...

Boston Brunch beta

Boston Brunch is a map and database of brunch places in the Boston area. Please tell me all the ways it sucks, so I can make it better! Like, for starters, let me know which places are missing (probably tons of them). But if you've been to any of the places that are shown, why not post a comment for them on how good/bad they are?

T billboard

Anyone see the new T billboard off the SE Expressway. It is right before you go in the tunnel. It says:

unleaded super unleaded premium plus... T
3.05 3.15 3.25... (This is the T logo, sorry i can't make it more obvious.)

Glad to see my fare money and taxes are going to tell me the price of gas. The Ts new thing is all about gas prices. The poll on their website is how much do you take the T because of gas prices.

Why am I complaning? Its better than the last sign that said: DependibiliT.

Walter Cuenin

He's the Newton priest and outspoken critic of Bernie Law who suddenly resigned.

Cuenin baptized both Daigo and his son:

It is really really too bad, and I am more sad than angry ...

Domenico compares Cuenin to Dennis Kozlowski, former Tyco CEO and soon to be inmate because of the way Cuenin had been receiving a living expense stipend and car lease and insurance payments from the parish over and above what the rules and regulations of the archdiocese lay out:

... What's ironic is that liberals have been pointing to Kozlowski's antics at Tyco as another example of conservative corporate greed at the expense of the little guy. But here we have this liberal icon doing the same thing. I wonder if all the liberal deep-pockets in Newton will pony up to help Cuenin pay off his tens of thousands of debt when he's apparently done the very same thing that liberals have condemned in others. ...

Hurricane coverage blows

Paul watches slackjawed as CNN has somebody try to stand in a wind tunnel at 111 m.p.h. as part of its live, continuing coverage of Tropical Storm Rita:

... For some unknown reason the cable news networks adopted a policy that once NOAA indentifies a hurricane they will devote every single broadcast minute tracking it until it makes landfall. Unless something really important happens like a plane landing safely at an airport. ...
