Another way we differ from the Nooyawkas

With a little help from his far-flung correspondents on either side of 495, Norm answers the question of why Bostonians often say "Av," but New Yorkers always say "Avenue".

Hey, white squirrel!

You'd yell it, too, if you were biking around Jamaica Pond and you suddenly saw one of the Jamaica Pond white squirrels. Fortunately the Urban Pantheist didn't yell it loud enough to scare away the squirrel - letting his companion snap a photo of the wee beastie.

You really can get anything on eBay

Just spotted on a Bostonist post about Bill Weld (which reveals some shocking news about Weld's tenure in Massachusetts that many of us knew years ago):

Discount Governor for sale

Who knew you could get Romney for a song? Or is this somebody from the remainder bin, like Jane Swift?

Starting the week off right

Hilatron sums up Mondays, especially Mondays after moving with a cat that doesn't want to move:

Drag, drag, drag your ass
Drag your ass to work;
Everybody on the D train
Is a stupid jerk. ...

The slobs of Beacon Hill

Jay lives on a dirty street:

Moments ago a city street sweeper brushed its way down Anderson Street on Beacon Hill. Down the middle of the street. That's because nine of the approximately twelve spaces between Revere and Phillips were filled with cars that weren't moved. ...

He wonders when Hizzoner will make good on his pledge to tow cars that stand in the way of streetsweeping progress. One wonders, though: In this age of self-reliance, why wait for City Hall? Maybe Beacon Hill should get off its duff, follow the Back Bay's lead and annoint some block-captain vigilantes (but would they in turn need supervision to make sure they don't become parking Nazis?).

In the hospital

Halley reports she was admitted to the hospital last night after:

a day of not feeling well, with pain in my left arm, back, shoulder, neck.

Docs don't think it's heart related, though. And how is she posting this news? Via a bedside 'Net connection.

Steve: Think good thoughts for Halley today.

Black Monday for the Pats?

Firestarter: A little over-dramatic? Maybe, but someone please tell me what the hell that was yesterday.

Patriots Insider: New England suffered what can only be regarded as a mild meltdown in Charlotte on Sunday.

It was a bad day all around for Jennifer, who started out watching the Pats:

But, that, uh, didn't go so well ("Touchdown my ass!"), so I switched over to the Sox. Sweet baby Jesus, that was even worse. I was so upset, I had to watch golf to calm down. ...

Brookline at 300

Some photos here. More, anyone?

Edithved spent part of festivities in Coolidge Corner trying to get people to talk on video about Grand Opening - the adult store:

... today felt so fucking rad. I loved talking to strangers and conversing about the need for a comfortable space for women to buy dildos and the like. I loved feeling like I actually was part of a community and feeling like ya, I'll probably make films in some capacity whether or not I get into my fancy California grad schools. ...

Fun with political domain names

Bill White is running for state Senate in Somerville and Medford. His Web site, www.billwhiteforsenate.com, doesn't mention what party he belongs to. www.whiteforsenate.com corrects that oversight.

Via David, who, after admiring the mildly amusing content of the latter site, says it's kind of juvenile:

... Certainly, it's fair to ask Mr. White the extent to which he supports the stated platform of the party of which he is a member. But to suggest - by posting a link on the joke site - that White supports, for example, the Article 8 Alliance (the dopes who want to impeach the SJC Justices who voted for gay marriage) isn't especially constructive. ...

A bone to pick

For the past week, the kids at the Joyce Kilmer Elementary School in West Roxbury have been all atwitter about the bones on top of the trailer next to the school, the ones you can only see if you're atop the slide or standing on the wall in front of the school. What died up there? And why does it have a knitting needle stuck in it?

A mystery! We went up there today with a camera with a zoom lens. From the top of the slide, it looked like the remains of a goose shot with an arrow (yeah, like I know what a goose skeleton looks like). Of course, I then climbed up the massive stone abutment next to the stairs to the school for another view. And when we got home and called up that photo on the computer, we saw that, whatever the thing is, it didn't die up there, unless, as Greta posited, it's a robot goose that escaped, then died ("There's no such thing!" I said. "How do you know?" she retorted):

More bones

So it's still a mystery - What sort of skeleton is it and how did it get up there? But at least we know there's not a rogue goose hunter loose in West Roxbury (as opposed to rogue potato shooters).
