On the water

Sculling

We picked up some subs at Roggie's, then headed over to the MDC, um, DCR park on the Charles River in Brighton. As we ate, we watched the parade of canoes, kayaks and big/bigger/biggest power boats on the river - with the odd sculler thrown in. But my favorite was the guy chugging along in his own personal tug boat:

Stupid solutions for simple problems

David cannot believe that state officials honestly believe the way to protect Hatch Shell concert goers is to allow parking on Storrow Drive:

I'm sorry, but this is the STUPIDEST FUCKING THING I HAVE EVER HEARD. First, it seems to be a solution in search of a problem - when asked, the DCR spokesperson admitted that the "careening car" scenario has never happened. Of course, it's not outside the realm of possibility that it might. But DCR's solution to this perceived problem is about the worst possible one they could have devised. Here's a better one: put up a better guard rail - that would protect the many people who jog or bike along the Esplanade even when there's no Hatch Shell event. I'd almost even prefer that they just close Storrow Drive all together during Hatch Shell events, as long as they put up LOTS OF BIG SIGNS warning us that the closure is coming. ...

Note: Steve broke this story in May.

They're back

trash

A friend who lives on Allston Street reported the city generally did an excellent job this weekend keeping returning-student trash from getting out of hand. But she pointed us to Bellvista Road, where the city missed a spot.

Memo to U-Haul employees

If you're going to post fake accolades for the company, you might want to post from outside the company.

Earlier:
U-Haul sucks.

Katrina victims on the Cape

Aerial view of Camp Edwards barracks

Where they'll be staying: Some of the barracks at Camp Edwards (image via MassGIS OLIVER).

Jay approves of the plan to bring Katrina victims to Camp Edwards instead of the South Boston convention center:

... Moving people from the Superdome to the Astrodome to the Convention Center would have merely compounded the initial mistake of putting people in one mass room. ... This is Mitt's moment -- and he seems almost itching to replicate his 2000 Winter Olympics success. I'm pretty confident he'll handle it well -- as will the people of Massachusetts.

Globe discovers bo-bo-bo nonsense

SoWa? EaBo? Boston plays name game, which features this intriguing quote from the EaBo guy:

He hopes it will catch on, replacing the "negative connotation" he feels plagues East Boston with a sense that the neighborhood is eclectic, diverse, and ''emerging."

"Even if it's smaller, we may have more of that New York feel someday," he said.

Somebody buy that man a Yankees cap! And put him on the next Acela Metroliner Fung Wah to Nooyawk!

Hairy situation in West Roxbury

Dave wonders: How many hair salons can Centre St. in West Roxbury have?

... I am not saying this because I am jealous, but the other day I took Matthew for a walk and I swear I passed 7 from my house to (Catholic Memorial). Is this necessary? Who is saying "I would love to open a hair salon and I have the perfect place. Right in between Salon Sassoon and Snippy Snips and across the street from Sexual Scissors." ...

Ed. note: The answer: Centre Street has about as many hair salons as it does funeral homes. As well as one barber shop that proudly boasts of "7 1/2 barbers."

Katrina quilts

Kate wanted to do something for Katrina victims. She has no emergency skills, but she can sew. So she's now in the middle of a 72-hour quilting blitz:

... I cannot think of a better way to spend a three-day weekend than getting bedding to those who need it. ...

Do Katrina victims need her help?

As we turned onto Austin Street in Hyde Park this afternoon, a well dressed woman tried to wave us down. She was holding a small cardboard sign reading "Veggies for Katrina." When I waved and shook my head no as we drove by, she jumped into the street and started angrily waving her arms and yelling at us.

Lady, maybe you might want to consider whether people driving by you have already decided how to contribute to Katrina relief and don't need veggies.

Anti-gay march, protest, fizzle

Only a few people showed up to protest at-large City Council candidate Roy Owens anti-gay (and anti-drug) march yesterday, but hardly anybody showed up to support Owens, either, eeka reports:

... Roy Owens did not succeed in sending the message that Roxbury (or Boston, or Massachusetts) is a place where messages of homophobia go unopposed. He and his group may well have marched after we left. Groups of four or five people walk around neighborhoods spreading misinformation all the time. A few people may listen. Most don't. ...
