The Red Line signal tripper

Spatch reports on a Red Line commute gone bad:

The Red Line driver I had today was running late. I could tell he (or she) was running late, because she (or he) kept tripping all the goddamn signals. Tripping the signals involves illegally running through a red signal. Running a red signal is illegal, cause, you're, like, supposed to STOP at those things. When this happens, the train runs over an upraised "trip arm" which triggers an emergency stop, grinding the train to a halt and you have to reset shit and then proceed. Ever had the Red Line just screech to a halt and then pause for a minute or two? It's not because the train busted or anything. Someone just tripped a signal. Hooray, now you'll be late! ...

Tony C

Jim explains why Tony Conigliaro started out as just a baseball player I liked a lot, but he became a hero of mine:

... He never gave less than his all and he never gave up until he had thoroughly exhausted his possibilities. Those are traits we should all strive to have. ...

The name game

Mats says it's pointless to resist the attempts by Realtors and poseur Nooyawk wannabe's to rename every last Boston square, so he proposes that those of us who actually live here rename things first:

...There's a lot of action around Kenmore Square these days, but don't be fooled by the gloss and hype. The real hot spot is not around the Easteran Standard at Kenmore Square's West End, but rather in Charles Gate Meadows, between Kenmore Street and Charles Gate West. I've seen scaffolding there recently, so that neighborhood is definitely happening.

But perhaps most overlooked is the vibrant, hidden gem that stretches from Public Garden to Mass Ave, between Commonwealth Avenue and Newbury Street. You may know it as Public Alley 330 (and counting) but in the biz we think of it as Copley Lane. ...

So what's Howie Carr done for Katrina survivors?

Bri ponders after reading Carr's column (you have to pay to read) complaining that Ted Kennedy and John Kerry didn't open their homes to survivors:

... Sure on the surface, the concept of the piece seemed solid. The wealthy in this country should donate more to help their fellow humans. However that is completely missing the boat on what the issue is here. The issue is why are we even having to talk about celebrities and pols having to donate money? Why are we in this situation? Howie glazes over the failure of the system in order to take cheap shots at liberals and to laud Curt Schilling even as his politics fail him faster than his split-finger. ...

Where was Howie Carr's piece on the lack of money Dick Cheney has donated to the cause? Yes, he too has reaped the rewards of taxpayer's monies. How much is Karl Rove good for these days?

Thankfully Carr didn't tell us how much he did or didn't donate. ...

My standard newspaper disclosure.

Matching funds

Just because I have the mind of a sieve doesn't mean you do, too, but just in case: If you make any Katrina donations, you might want to check with your HR department to see if your employer does matching contributions (fortunately in my case, our HR people sent out a memo about it today).

Good news

Jeff reports:

A very eerie, but wonderful thing happened today, which is that my grandfather, after missing for over a week, was found safe in Houston. Like a five year old I quickly hopped to my computer and phone and sent out 30-40 of the happiest messages I could ever send. ...

Things she never wishes to see again on the T

Marilora posts a list of nine things she's seen on the T she wishes she hadn't, including:

Hipster kids on the Blue Line. You think you look hot in your vintage 80's gear, don't you? Ok, kiddies, take it from me, a person who lived through the 80s. That stuff was not that attractive the first time around. If you are too young to remember when Madonna didn't have a fake British accent, you definitely should not be dressed like you are a back-up dancer from her Like a Virgin tour.

Camp Edwards issues

UPDATE: This may all be moot since evacuees don't seem to want to spend the winter on a frozen Cape 1,500 miles from home.

UPDATE UPDATE: Some of them came after all.

So Gov. Romney says Camp Edwards may not be a Motel 6, but the accomodations are OK (aside from the random man-eating coyote). SwissFreek, who stayed in a Camp Edwards barrack earlier this year as a member of the Civil Air Patrol, begs to differ:

... This year we've got broken windows, missing hand rails in the stairs, rooms where none of the lights work, rooms where doors don't fit their frames, bathrooms where less than half the sinks/urinals/toilets are non-functional, with raw sewage backing up and running across the floors, lockers that are barely holding together or missing entirely. There was a bed that had dried vomit on the mattress. Another that smelled so badly of cigarettes
that the person sleeping on it took on the smell. ...

Jay, meanwhile, proposes Camp Edwards as a solution for all those Nooyawka wannabees intent on renaming all of Boston's neighborhoods:

... Bus the hipsters on Fung Wah to Camp Edwards and give the city housing to Cajuns, who can add a little genuine life, spice and culture to Boston. ... Hey, free housing in Boston! Bring recipes! ... Take the hipsters' property by eminent domain? Now that would be an irony I could support.
