So, are you miserable over the Sox?

Just in case you missed it, the Globe Ideas section yesterday ran a piece by some self-acknowledged pointy-headed intellectual about how miserable eastern Massachusetts has become since the Sox won the World Series last fall.

Johnny wonders how that got into the paper:

... It's been a while since I've read something so frustratingly dumb. Just useless. How is it that people get paid to inflict this kind of poop on us? The Sox won the goddamned World Series, which would be the ultimate point of fielding a major league baseball team. Pull your head out of your ass and enjoy it.

Food and wine

Thanks to Dee, we now know that Massachusetts law requires that any establishment selling liquor for consumption on the premises must also sell food. As an example, she points to Murphy's Law, 837 Summer St., in South Boston, whose menu consists of, in its entirety:

  • Assorted Beer
  • Mixed Drinks
  • Wine
  • Mixed Nuts
  • Piggy's Pizza
  • Soda
  • Cigarettes

John, meanwhile, notes efforts in the state legislature to repeal a ban on wine doggy bags:

Aren't we all tired of leaving behind half-full bottles of overpriced pinot noir? The People demand reform! And screw-tops.

Wine Gallery

Judith reports:

Last evening Ken and I had a marvelous experience at the Wine Gallery on Route 9 in Brookline. This summer we've visited a number of Boston-area liquor stores that have excellent wine departments at discounted prices: Kappy's in Somerville, Martignetti's in Brighton, Marty's Fine Wines in Newton, and several others too unnoteworthy to mention. I must say I had the most fun and the most pleasant experience at the Wine Gallery. ...

On the jury

The verdict rendered, 12 Frogs can now discuss being on the jury in a medical malpractice case:

It didn't take very long to decide. No one was in a hurry, though it was the first day of the fourth week of jury duty; we wanted to be sure we were right. The fourteen of us (alternates weren't chosen after all) spent most of our deliberating time playing devil's advocate, trying to punch holes in our decision, and in the end, we couldn't. It was unanimous: we didn't think the doctor was in the wrong. ...

Ugly game

Red is disgusted:

Wow. Forget everything you've seen before last night. This was the worst loss of the season. Just a sickening display, and about the angriest I've been after a game since John Flaherty broke up Pedro's no-hit bid back in 2003. ...
