The mayor gave me a cupcake

Slice!

The city and Channel 4 celebrated Boston's 375th anniversary on Saturday with some cake and cupcakes at Quincy Market. It was every bit as surreal as it sounds. Anchors Lisa Hughes and Josh Binswanger spent an hour or so doing live shots in a floodlit area, standing with a small "375" cake in front of some Bostonians and many befuddled tourists who had no idea who they were or why CBS was broadcasting live but who nevertheless stuck around so they could periodically wave at the camera. Fortunately, there was a local woman in a lounge chair there to explain it all to them - after first asking puzzled looking people if they were from Boston, she'd explain all about Boston's 375th anniversary. Then, when she'd satisfied their curiosity, she'd complain about how she should have stayed home because then she could watch the whole thing live in comfort. In the photo above, Hizzonah cuts the ceremonial cake while one of his grandkids (lower right) eyes the frosting.

Fortunately for the teeming masses, who occasionally broke out into a "We want cake!" chant, at the last moment, a couple of delivery guys from Mike's in the North End arrived with two large boxes of sheet cake and cupcakes. Menino, an aide and Binswanger handed out the goodies. Menino handed me a vanilla-frosting cupcake for Greta ("here you go sweetheart," he said to her). But when she saw there was chocolate, she handed the cupcake back to me and demanded one of those. Nancy, meanwhile, was having none of the cupcake nonsense - birthday parties demand cake and so she asked Binswanger for a piece and, after he handed out some more cupcakes, he cut her a piece.

Waiting for the live shot

Huh

One local guy seemed stunned that he could actually see Hughes' legs (besides her blue "375" shirt, she had a red skirt on) - "at least I got to see her legs!" he said a couple of times. She also had some interesting footware:

Huh

Calmer on the Orange Line

After last week's Orange Line nightmare, I expected the worst on Saturday. But things went smoothly - and T personnel actually explained what was going on and where you could get shuttle buses to Oak Grove.

On the way home, though, there was some fun before the train left Downtown Crossing for Forest Hills. For some reason, the conductor had to close the doors for a second, then open them again. He came on the PA to ask people to get out of the doorway so he could do this. He was polite at first. The doors, at least in our car, closed. But apparently not everybody wanted to move. He got frustrated and started yelling:

Get out of the doorway! GET OUT OF THE DOORWAY! Vito, it's a kid in the first car!

Apparently Vito took care of the kid with dispatch for the doors closed then opened again and we were soon on our way.

Free tomatoes

It's always amazing what's left lying on the ground when Haymarket closes up on Saturday.

Don't hate him because he has a super-fast 'Net connection

Dan now has fiber-optic 'Net access at home - like 13-megabyte per second downloads. He details and photographs the whole installation process.

Copy editor to the newsroom, stet!

Jay says that the lead from this Globe story is the worst ever:

A federal prosecutor yesterday urged a judge to reject a request by the media to lift a protective order that forbids the release of evidence that the government has turned over to defense lawyers in its perjury case against former House speaker Thomas M. Finneran.

You can't go home again

Jim and his wife take the Mattapan trolley back to the old neighborhood to see the house he grew up in:

... As we walked, Donna said this and that about the houses - "Oh, look at the nice way they've redone that porch", "That one looks better now with siding" - but while I heard her, my mind was spinning. I actually felt slightly faint at one point. Somewhere in my heart of hearts I think I had still considered this "my" home, but as much as I may have wanted to feel as if this were a homecoming of sorts, I instead felt as though I had become part of a "Through The Looking Glass" type of story, my body grown too large without my knowledge or permission. It was akin to one of those dreams where you're in public and all of a sudden you discover that you're naked. I felt totally out of place. I half expected people to come out of the houses to stare at me and point and laugh. ...

Contractors suck

Amy provides six months' worth of photographic proof and meticulous notes on how, out of every 100 contractors, 99 are complete scum.

Feast

Karl notes the North End getting ready for St. Anthony's Feast this weekend:

Last night as I got home from work the city had already blocked off my street, and many of the surrounding streets, in preparation. The canolli, pasta and sausage carts are already setting up shop on the street. ...

Now as long as the power stays on ...

Also this weekend: Boston Carnival Parade on Martin Luther King Boulevard and in Franklin Park.

Holy Ghosts

Holy Ghosts, A great debate is happening about closing another Church in the the South End of Boston. Unfortunately some of the story is missing. Yes Holy Trinity Church rents space to Kit Clakr's Cardinal Mederios Center and to Bridge over Troubled Waters. However, the German Community hever partipated in the great cival rights movements in the South End and Roxbury. Mel King would not be welcomes by this community. Thias community did not paripated in the great housing drive by St. Stephens Episcopal Church,Pine Street Inn, Haley House and the Jesuit Urban Center. Futhermore, the Latin Mass community does not welcome gay members. Perhaps there is some rasism going on. Maybe the Germans do not want so share a facility with the Chinese?

Globe football coverage not all that

Bruce continues his critique of the Globe sports section, today looking at football, basketball and Sports Editor Joe Sullivan. B- for basketball, C- for Sullivan and a D for football:

... To me, it seems a shame that we are in perhaps the middle of one of the greatest stretches of NFL history by one franchise, and to this point, the largest newspaper in the region has devoted second-rate coverage to it. This season should be interesting with a revamped lineup including Solomon and Reiss.

Bruce looks at baseball, hockey, columnists and media.

My standard newspaper disclosure.
