Miller commercial featuring Twin Donuts - by Oscar-winning director Errol Morris.
In a message to "our beloved patrons," the owners of the iconic Twin Donuts, 501 Cambridge St. in Allston, announced yesterday it's last day of business is March 23.
In their note, the Taing family wrote they will be keeping their other establishments, Cafe Mirror and the Brighton Cafe, both in Brighton, open.
The Taings have owned the restaurant, which offers a lot more than just donuts, since 2001.
Leang Sim Taing and Chiang Sou Pang, the elders of the family, survived the Khmer Rouge in their native Cambodia, fled to Thailand and eventually settled in the Boston area, according to a 2015 profile of the family and Twin Donuts by Boston Hospitality Review.
Local landlord the Hamilton Co. owns the building, and has since 1985, when founder Harold Brown bought it.

Did you use up all of your "Venerables" ?
As a child we briefly lived across the street from Twin Donuts. What is now the KFC was a Jack in the Box when we lived there. Made for a good day to hit both spots going to and from school. Always sad to hear a long standing business is closing.
Whoa

I remember one being in Central Square, decades ago, but I don't recall exactly where.

I mean if this place isn't venerable then nothing is.
I live close by and while I was never really a regular I always thought that sign was a national treasure. I got a fun video of it when it was in a state of peak Allston (best watched with volume on for full effect).

Did they post their message online anywhere? If so, could you please link to them? Very sad news.
I don't know where they posted it originally, but ...

That spread like, well, hotcakes online yesterday afternoon and evening, but nobody provided a source. Just to be sure, I employed an old reporting trick and actually called Twin Donuts this morning and got confirmation.
Calling? What a concept!

Did they give any reason for the closing?

We have an elderly friend who STILL picks up the phone and dials "O" when she has a question. (Most recently she called to ask what time it was right now in Hawaii.)
At least...

...Cafe Mirror is still there.
tbh I always preferred Cafe Mirror's chocolate honey dip donuts.
