Anti-abortion group says it's close to getting Massachusetts license plates
By adamg on Wed, 09/23/2009 - 6:02pm
Massachusetts Choose Life says it is only 214 sign-ups away from getting the Registry of Massachusetts to begin offering "Choose Life" vanity plates - part of whose proceeds would then fund the group's mission.
The state requires non-profit groups to either sign up 3,000 motorists for a charity plate or 1,500 motorists if the group puts up a $100,000 bond. The plates would cost $40 - with $12 going to the state to pay for stamping out the plates at MCI Cedar Junction and the rest going to Choose Life (there is an additional fee for swapping out an existing Massachusetts plate).

that is one ugly license
that is one ugly license plate.
Choose Life
Abortion is ugly, too.
Sure is. I'm not pro-life
Sure is. I'm not pro-life and I'm not pro-abortion...I'm pro-choice.
Whose Life?
The already born one who can vote?
You're a sharp one!
You're a sharp one!
Know what I'd like?
A license plate with a coat hanger on it.
Start getting the signatures, then
I'm sure you can find a bunch of Massachusetts residents who will sign up, better start hitting the grocery stores for signatures.
Choosy Zombies Choose Life
Is it just me or does she look a bit ruddy in the face?
No...oh, oh....oh, no...she's not hugging that infant! She's eating its BRAINS!!!
OM NOM NOM NOM...
Question
Can I get one with a modern looking mother of color holding a mixed-race child?
Or are they sticking with Edwardian Era Frontier Woman and her babe?
I hope
An abortion doc can get plate #0065 for his weekend Mercedes just for the irony.
The power (and choices) of words
Adam, it's your site, so obviously you can write the headlines the way you want to, but using terms like "anti-abortion" instead of "pro-life" obviously shows your opinion of such groups.
If you used the term "anti-life" to describe the "pro-choice" supporters, you know what uproar that would cause. Stick to "pro-life" and "pro-choice" and you're much safer. If you insist on "anti-abortion" for the choose life groups, then either call the other side "anti-life" or "pro-abortion".
Fair is fair, right?
I think "anti-abortion" is
I think "anti-abortion" is much closer to a real descriptor of what you term "pro-life." Pro-choice means just that: a woman can choose to have a child, or she can choose not to. Pro-choice and pro-abortion are not the same thing. What you refer to as pro-life is actually "anti-choice."
life begins at conception
life begins at conception and ends at birth, right?
And this is the point. Many
And this is the point.
Many anti-abortion supporters are very pro death penalty and capital punishment, fundamentalist being the hardest pushers.
At least the catholic church takes a pro-life stance on all issues; war, capital punishment, abortion.
That said, the fundies down south are the loudest pot bangers on the issue. They also the ones getting the most abortions.
God has a way with irony, no?
pro-life for individuals (AND anti-abortion as a public policy?)
I don't know if this pro life group raises money to fund efforts to end or limit abortion or if they use the funds to help people who choose to give birth. That would make a big difference to me.
This whole effort seems to be run by one person who lives in Wakefield, grew up in Peabody. She did a show on CatholicTV cable channel.

The woman organizing the
The woman organizing the effort said in an interview (I believe with Emily Rooney on WGBH) that the funds will go to crisis pregnancy centers.
Syntax for the sensitive?
I prefer to think of myself as pro-take-responsibilty(GASP)or anti-murdered-children.
Dead Mothers
Of course, none of the "pro-life" people like to hear about medical reality - gets in the way of their romantic fetishes.
"pro-life"
I agree with jeveuxsavoir, the "pro-life" moniker is an incredibly inane one. Anti-abortion is far more accurate.
That said, it looks like a stupid license plate.
A better term for "pro-life"
Anti-Woman.
Most of the "pro-life" movement is just a front for controlling women and preventing them from owning their own bodies and fertility.
Note the wah wah over "late term abortions": not only are they extremely rare and require authorization, they are generally only done for very extreme reasons. Note also the recent push to classify most forms of birth control and emergency contraception as "abortion", even though they work by suppressing ovulation. Misinformation campaigns have convinced too many people that there is some "fertilized egg" flushed out despite the clearly stated scientific principals upon which these methods work.
Again this, How does
Again this,
How does pro-life turn into criminally banning contraception methods
Simple
Same people who are leading pro-life organizations are also pushing to classify contraception as equal to abortion. Simple.
Google it yourself - look at which organizations are anti-Plan B and pushing bans on contraceptive methods - even though they are lying about how those methods work.
If this becomes reality
We have to have a pool to bet on when the first car with this plate kills a pedestrian or cyclist.
the pool
<6 months after they hit the road. <2 months if it's early in the school season.
I do not like it because it
I do not like it because it is obviously a political statement. The State will be in the business of creating and handing out charged political statements to people using an official Government arm. I understand we have ones for environmental trusts but that is for the administration of an environmental trust.
What is the difference between this and if I got some friends to get signatures for a Democrats rule plate? How about Republicans suck? I bet you I could get it done easy enough. On a more serious note we could have plates that say Marriage Equality one side a man and a man are kissing and on the other side a woman and a woman are kissing all in formal wedding attire.
i would get a marriage equality plate...
... i would also get a decriminalized marijuana plate.
sadly political statements are not barred from the provisions of getting a special plate.
in which case, i say let's make some real statements.
i support a Mooninite Plate for massachusetts!
If this passes I say that a
If this passes I say that a push should be made for Marriage Equality plates. If there is an anti abortion plate with abortion being legal in MA the conservatives can not take issue with a pro marriage plate seeing as gay marriage is legal here.
Why wait?
The registry has guidelines for creating the special plates. Here's the link.
If you feel strongly about it, then why not start the process? It has nothing to do with whether another type of plate is approved.
Well, it's a loophole
The plate has to be aimed to support a nonprofit organization. Nonprofit organizations can't have political involvement as a major function. Clearly, these people's mission is to have abortion outlawed, but since a nonprofit can't be involved in that, they just alter the language a little bit so it looks like they're promoting healthy pregnancies and advocating for adoption.
Which, if that was really what they were doing, they'd have links to all of the major providers of ob/gyn care, not just the strictly anti-choice clinics that disseminate misinformation.
And they'd be affiliated with mainstream healthcare and human services organizations, not just right-wing religious groups and a group whose main activity is promoting homophobia. I mean, doesn't it seem weird that organizations like MARE and DCF and Home For Little Wanderers aren't jumping at the chance to support an adoption advocacy group? Oh, right, because it's a freakin "we want to outlaw abortion" group masquerading as a nonprofit.

Umm...
The FAQ on their website are for the Illinois plate, not the Massachusetts one.
Also, in case it wasn't obvious, it's a bunch of bullshit that their organization's mission is to promote healthy pregnancies and births and to encourage adoption. Their section on "pregnancy resources" only links to strictly anti-choice health centers, including several that disseminate medical misinformation under the guise of counseling. They're also affiliated by the Massachusetts Family Institute, whose main activity is promoting homophobia.
Hey, I'm a huge supporter of healthy pregnancy, healthy births and adoption. But I'm an even bigger supporter of medically accurate information and viewing all people as equal. And of political groups not being granted nonprofit status through loopholes where they create an offshoot whose website leaves out the political lobbying.

I am totally pro-life. I am
I am totally pro-life. I am positive if abortion was legal in 1962 I wouldn't be here.
I would put my name on this list 214 times if I could just to make sure this plate is available.
My only complaint on the plate design itself it needs to be more colorful, more colors, nice and bright. But then again everything should be multi-colored as far as I'm concerned.
Also, not a drawing but an actual photo of a real mother and child would be better than a simple etching. Not sure if this is possible though.
