By Michael Kerpan on Sat, 11/07/2009 - 1:35pm
The Jamaica Plains Gazzette has an article about how Forest Hills Station has run out of Bike Charlie Cards. In it, mention is made (in passing) that this cage for 100 bikes cost $4,800,000 (4.8 million!!!!)

Is this a mispint? Or an indication of Boston graft on an even more massive scale than usual?

That's only $48,000 per cyclist.
And they are worth every penny - just ask them. ;-)
Cheap at the price
Provided they lock the cyclists IN in the cages instead of
allowing them on the public roads!
In addition to bike cages at
In addition to bike cages at Alewife and Forest Hills Station, funding for additional locations has become available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The MBTA will use $4.8 million in federal stimulus funding for a variety of programs to enhance and expand bicycle parking facilities at MBTA stations. This ARRA program will fund the construction of up to 10 additional bike cages and up to 50 covered bike racks at transit stations systemwide.
So how much of the $4.8 million....
...was used for the Forest Hills bike cage?
Answering my own question
Courtesy of Rob Consalvo and Angelo Scaccia's office I have an answer -- $250,000.
What about the $45 million Salem car/truck garage?
What about the Salem parking garage, which is slated to cost $45 million, why aren't you all crying about that waste? For the 750 cars that will hold, it comes to $60,000 per car/truck, BEFORE its built. We all know that will probably increase by 50% by the time its done.
