The health care bill in the house that includes the Stupak Amendment is far from final but it did advance the legislation. If the Senate can keep that kind of provision out, and conference keeps it out, it won't become law.

If that's the case, it would seem that abortion rights in health care may not require Coakley's "no" vote after all.

That said, if Coakley was in the house and voted against the health bill, and as a result it didn't pass, she'd be held accountable for tanking health care. That'd be a good way to Ted Kennedy's shoes.

By the by, the house bill passed by two votes, Owens of NY-23 and Cao (R-LA).

This does it for me. Coakley has no practical sense of politics being the art of the possible. This is from the "say anything/do anything" school of campaigning -- unprincipled and unbridled. Capuano was attractive to me at the outset, but his record of missed votes this year troubles me. Pagliuca isn't compelling. Khazei is the most interesting and so far the most principled.

If you look at the Capuano lifetime record of missed votes that number goes from the 120's to less then 30 per. He is doing this crazy thing called running for Senate that is taking up some of his time. Normally during election years the Chambers arrange it so there are less votes and allow their members to go back to the districts to campaign more. With this being a special election and with the health care bill this has most certainly not been the case. A few votes were missed but nothing that needed his stamp of approval to pass. He even missed a crucial weekend of voting this past weekend to stick around and vote for HCR and red eyed it back to Western MA to go to rallies and forums. If he did not have campaign events you would say he does not care enough to have a campaign event, if he misses some votes to have an event you say he does not care enough about the job to vote.

I hadn't made up my mind yet on who I'd vote for, but Martha's blatant display of naivete just narrowed the field from 3 to 4.

what does that mean?

It means my fingers weren't quite listening to my brain. Narrowed from 4 to 3.

I think you mean that Pagliuca and Khazei said that they would have voted for the bill despite the amendment.

Capuano didn't have to address the hypothetical because he already voted for the bill as amended.

Yes, of course, and I need to change the site slogan to "all errors all the time," perhaps. Thanks for the correction.
