Imagine 128 being shut due to cows

Massachusetts State Police issued a statement today:

Today at 10:29 am, Troopers from the State Police Barracks in Springfield responded to reports of cows walking on Route 91 South, near Exit 8, in Springfield. Upon arrival, the Troopers located two heifers, estimated to weigh approximately 500 pounds each, walking in and out of the travel lanes. The investigation revealed that a latch on a trailer that was hauling the animals to Enfield, Conn., had become dislodged. The cows then escaped into slow-moving traffic.

To ensure the safety of the motoring public as well as the safety of the animals, Troopers subsequently shut down Route 91 South in order to remove the animals to a safe location.

Thanks, David!

When I was driving truck, I came upon a similar scene on I-10 somewhere in Texas or New Mexico in the middle of the night. Of course, we were all doing 70 mph at the time, and your humble commenter almost died that night. There were dead and dying cows all over the road. When I pulled into a truck stop hours later to eat, we were told that after we left, cars and trucks slammed into the stopped cars and bystanders and killed a few people and injured many more. Close call. You have no idea what truck drivers go through to get your crap to the stores.

Doesn't 500 lbs seem a little light for a heifer?

Good cow story: About 50 yrs. ago, Officers Markey and Randall of the Wilmington P.D. found a cow wandering loose near Silver Lake. Randall suggested he'd put a rope around its neck and he'd hold it out the window while they slowly drove to the nearest farm. Off. Leo Markey nixed that idea. Nope, we'll put it in the back seat. How they did it, nobody knows, but the next shift had to deal with a cow flap in the back seat of the cruiser. True story, one of many about Leo Markey.

I like to stream KRXA (progressive talk station from the vicinity of Monterey, California). One of my favorite things is the traffic reports. They get livestock, the odd person and all sorts of other stuff obstructing traffic, and it's not occasional, either.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston tweeted today:

We responded to a call for a stray kitten in a dangerous area on Rt 128 South in Needham.

Yes, so, so many questions, but, alas, ARL never replies to you when you reply to their tweets.
