Fight at the Kells leads to assault charge

Wicked Local Allston/Brighton reports a bouncer was charged with assault after a melee on Jan. 24. He told police he was trying to break up a fight among three women and was pushed to the ground on top of one of them; that woman wound up with a head laceration. Hmm, were there any rap shows across the street that night?

Years ago, they used to have an open mic event there, and I used to go occasionally. It was great fun, and the acoustic-driven music provided more of a 'love-the-world' atmosphere than a "I'm going to beat the shit out of you" type of vibe.

The licensing board should require the Kells to bring back Open Mic Night!

Not sure if it was an ownership change or if the owner just decided to go in a different direction. A few years ago, it was very Irish (thus "The Kells") and much more low-key. Then it went psuedo "Asian Fusion" with its kitchen, was somewhat rebranded, and started having these techno/rap/pop parties and went downhill from there. The fact that they still tout their "Best Irish Bar" credentials is despicable.

Just checked the menu on their website (which looks like club-hop crap designed by a MySpace Profile editor) and it appears they gave up on Asian Fusion and have gone to straight-up, bar food schlock (fried, fried, and griddled...comin' right up!).

Hopefully the licensing board isn't letting the bar rest on its past laurels since it's just not the same place being run the same way any more.

This place is basically 2 different places (day and night). Its actually a nice bar during the day or after work, with TVs and half way decent pub food. After 9pm its simply a different place depending on the DJ and crowd. And the restuarant part has changed hands a bunch of times. Its been asian a few times I think.

The last time I noticed it was touting it's "Asian Fusion" menu, it meant that instead of pub food (wings, burgers, onion rings) it was Asian pub food (egg rolls, satay skewers, dumplings).

They had a good Shepherd's Pie. They also had a traditional-style weekend brunch, with fully-tended carving stations, omelet stations, waffle stations, etc. as opposed to the self-serve feeding trough style that I see way too often these days. I guess that style doesn't sit well with the kiddies these days. Oh well.
