Cambridge City Hall doesn't have one. Somerville City Hall doesn't have one. Arlington Town Hall doesn't have one. I see no reason for Boston to have one. A democratic government that trusts its citizens has no need for security checkpoints.
I'm sure it's all part of "in a post-9/11 world" paranoia/security theater on the part of a city administration that was traumatized by cartoon characters, but, you know, even aside from al Queda, there are some deranged people wandering around downtown, so I'm not so sure it's such a bad thing to try to protect City Hall.
As somebody who now visits City Hall pretty regularly, I haven't found it that big a deal to go through the checkpoint - way, way less intrusive than going through an airport checkpoint and on par with what you'll find at courthouses these days.

There's a knife store in Faneuil Hall, Chesapeake Knife, that will hold your knife for you. I think it's in South Market.
Or, you know

We could let her bring the knife into City Hall. It's five inches long. Who's she going to attack with it?
Well, you asked

At five inches, she'd have more than twice the blade necessary to hurt Little Will.

It's not the stand-up citizens I'd worry about
