As it happens I used these lanes this morning, and was SO pleasantly surprised to find them.
I was dreading my ride down Harvard Street, but it's the only real way to get from point A (my house) and point B (my Dentist's) by bike.
It's definitely wide enough, and the white line, while not protecting me from stupid people, subtly reminds people to drive a little further left
They'll get used as double-parking space by cabs, pizza delivery guys, etc. Just like bus stops, because BPD and Transit Police don't give a damn to enforce the $100 fine.
Also, are they painted far enough from parking spaces to be out of the "door zone"?
If the city was smart it would increase double-parking, bike lane, and bus zone fines to $500 and ruthlessly enforce the law. Double fines and enforcement on Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, misc. event days in the respective neighborhoods and watch the money pour in. Public safety, parking lots/garages, resident parking, cyclists, the MBTA, and the city's budget would win big.
No, not really, although my general practice is to ride the white line anyway to stay out of the DZ.
That space is already a double parking disaster, doubt the bike lanes will make it better (or worse)
There aren't enough cops to keep city streets safe from weekly murders yet you're more concerned with cops not patrolling bike lanes so you don't have to steer your bike around the pizza delivery guy who makes minimum wage and is double-parked to deliver a pizza? Get real. If there's no room to steer around the double-parked pizza guy then you should stop your bike and walk it on the sidewalk then get back on the road and continue riding. Pay attention to the road, don't ride at a speed in which you couldn't stop at a moment's notice and you'll be better off than if delivery drivers get slapped with a $500 ticket for double-parking.
If a little kid runs in your path chasing after his ball and you can't stop in time because you're not paying attention and you're riding too fast, then you would at fault. Sharing the road applies to those on two wheels as well as four. The world doesn't revolve around you just because you ride a bike in the big bad city. If that's too much to ask of you, then you can walk, take public transportation or move to the suburbs.
Are you responding to anyone in particular, or are you just constructing a random straw man argument based around the topic of bicyclists?
Preventing murders and ticketing double-parkers are not mutually-exclusive activities. They're not even handled by the same department. Most tickets are given out by the BTD, and even if we assume that the average ticket is only $40, I'll bet each additional BTD employee brings in more than enough revenue to offset her salary. I don't think adding BTD workers is going to bankrupt the police department's gang unit.
Suggesting that bicyclists should slow down and dismount when they pass a double-parked car is ridiculous. Double-parking is extremely dangerous. That's one of the reasons it's illegal. The fact that delivery drivers making minimum wage can afford to double-park in Boston is evidence that either the fine is too low, or drivers are not being ticketed frequently enough. There are ways to deliver a pizza that don't involve double-parking or parking in bus stops.

Yeah, but that would require doing more than the bare minimum
