Boston coffee places that actually have coffee

Desperate times call for desperate measures
Desperate times call for desperate measures: As Julie Gendrano demonstrates.

From the folks manning the Twitter and Universal Hub Aquapocalypse desks:

Back Bay: Dunkin' Donuts in the Prudential Center; Finagle-a-Bagel, 536 Boylston St.

Beacon Hill: Capitol Coffee House, Bowdoin Street, next to the State House.

Cambridge: Pretty much every single place that normally serves coffee, because they're special.

Chinatown: Au Bon Pain at New England Medical Center.

Dorchester: Sugar Bowl Cafe on Dot. Ave. near JFK/UMass (cash only); Flat Black Coffee has iced coffee available at Dorchester Lower Mills and Ashmont stores.

Downtown: Mulligans on Canal Street; Cosi at South Station (trucked in from Cambridge); Plaza Deli, second floor, 2 Center Plaza; City Hall Deli, eighth floor, Boston City Hall; Max's on Milk Street; the Milk Street Cafe; Flat Black Coffee on Broad Street has hot and iced espresso drinks; Finagle-a-Bagel in Government Center; Sip Cafe in Post Office Square Park; Grassroots Cafe, 101 Arch St.

Hyde Park: TC's, Fairmount Avenue.

Jamaica Plain: Dunkin' Donuts, Centre Street (across from the fire station).

Longwood Medical Area: All the hospitals have their own water supply, so everything should be running. Au Naturals at Brigham and Women's for example.

Milton: Dunkin' Donuts, East Milton Square.

North End: Boston Common on Salem Street. All out, but will have more Tuesday morning.

Roslindale: Select Cafe, Roslindale Square (across from the train station).

Roxbury: Peet's at Northeastern International Village, 1175 Tremont. No espresso, though.

Somerville: Mr. Crepe in Davis Square; Blue Shirt Cafe, Davis Square; Aroma Cafe (formerly Cafe Rossini and Cafe Lola), on Highland Ave. just past Cedar St.; The Biscuit, 406 Washington St.

South Boston: Doughboy Donuts, 220 Dorchester Ave.; Flour by the Children's Museum.

South End:: Dunkin' Donuts at Mass. Ave. and Columbus Ave.; Mohr & McPherson Cafe, 460 Harrison Ave.; Mike's City Diner on Washington Street (closes at 3).

Watertown: Joe's Variety, Orchard Street.

Across the area: Au Bon Pain shops have coffee; except the one at the Pru.

Not sure how they are doing it but they have a line out the door and iced coffee appears to be leaving the building. I also second that there is coffee at ABP and Au Natural at BWH, we have a secure water source here on the main campus.

In Washington Square. Not sure about Athan's but Sbux is a no-go.

MGH Coffee central will only sell 12 oz coffees, must be rationing the water supply!

Boston Common Coffee on Salem St is only serving iced coffee now. The City Hall Deli, on the 8th floor of City Hall is serving Green Mountain coffee.

...or so I heard at the gym this morning.

I would imagine any coffee vendor in Cambridge would be selling coffee because they are not affected by the water problem.

I work in Cambridge - at Darwin's, a place that serves coffee - and I can verify this.

Capitol Coffee House, on Bowdoin Street next to the State House, is brewing away.

In the prudential center, ABP is coffeeless.

Dunkins's is running there, though (lines all the way back into the Sheraton)

I got coffee at ABP in Copley. Too bad it kinda sucks. What am I gonna do, take my business elsewhere? I bought 2 so I had an afternoon pick me up before heading to the Bruins game.

Barbara Lynch's fancy Italian restaurant in fort Point has coffee this morning for take-out.

It's basically a lunch counter and a small coffee costs $1.87...not really "fancy"

A counterperson said they came in early to boil the water. Come to think of it, Dunkin's coffee is so damn hot sometimes, they might not need to boil it any more than that.

Sugarbowl Café on Dot Ave has coffee too. And it's close to the JFK/Umass T stop. Bring cash though, it's cash only!

I was at Kupel's yesterday and they were selling coffee brewed with regular tap water. Their sign claimed they brewed at 195F and that made it safe. Needless to say, I went home and made my own coffee with bottled water. 195F is not enough to kill bacteria unless the contact time is extremely long. Also, I have no faith that their coffee machines can maintain that temperature.

Most bacteria die at that temp or lower. There are some extremely thermophilic bacteria that can survive up to 250F, but they're really rare and boiling isn't going to do a damn thing to harm them.

Which needs to be told to the people who make the handwashing posters saying to use warm water to kill germs. There's not a whole lot that 100-degree-ish handwashing water will kill but that happily stick around when faced with soap and 50-degree-ish water.

(If you want expert microorganism advice, I'm sure Swirlygrrl would be happy to provide us with more bacteria fun facts!)

Finagle a Bagel at 536 Boylston St. had it this morning, thank goodness!

In Davis Square, there was no coffee at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, or Diesel Cafe, but there was at Blue Shirt Cafe.

The new Aroma Cafe (formerly Cafe Rossini and Cafe Lola), on Highland Ave. just past Cedar Street, also had coffee yesterday. They told me they got their ice from Shaw's.

When I was at Sip this morning they had Americanos instead of regular drip coffee. They were selling them for drip coffee prices. Depending on whether you like americanos (I do) this could be a plus or a minus.

This is a new place on Riverside Ave. We went this morning after the green tap liquid we used with our Chemex coffee maker boiled up into something rather heinous.

In House Cafe and 2nd Cup Cafe are both serving.

Actually, I have not seen anywhere NOT serving. They all claim to boil their water when I ask.

Made it myself just like I usually do, only I used water from the 892478932798 containers of boiled water in the fridge.

NPR was doing a thing this afternoon with snippets of how waterpocalypse was affecting people. Someone said everyone at their office was cranky because no one had had any coffee today. Really? A whole office of people who don't own coffee makers?
