I didn't hear it in Brighton...but I was also watching TV with the windows completely shut due to the cold chill. However, the last time I heard a gigantic popping explosion in my neighborhood it was due to the power company's transformer on the pole outside my bedroom window breaking. It echoed pretty far for a short time after the boom.
Echoing this--power transformer
