I feel (strongly) that anyone caught doing anything to that statue should get the death penalty. There are a few things even the most idiotic criminals don't do and this is one of them.
Posting photos online adds to the problem

On a handout we got at work about vandalism (I think it was from the local PD or Keep America Beautiful), it said to take photos of vandalism to show the police, but said not to post such photos online, because this only gives the tag more visibility and makes it last after it's been removed, all of which encourages rival taggers and encourages the original tagger to try and become even more notorious.

Either Rachel knows the tagger and is helping publicize their work, or Rachel didn't think that maybe it's related to the current massive ecological disaster that's been going on for the last month+.

Or, as she's said in a number of places (WBUR article, Twitter, etc.), "Better Prey" was written in graffiti on the sidewalk in front of the BP'd ducks.

It's ok, Brett makes a valid point. Due to the nature of Twitter - 140 characters and whatnot - my original tweet wasn't very clear. The only graffiti visible in the photo I posted was "BP," and I just saw "better prey" on the ground nearby but didn't photograph it or explain it. Once I realized that a lot of people were looking at the photo, I added some additional information later in the day to clarify the "better prey" part. (And no, I don't know the tagger. To the best of my knowledge, I don't tend to hang around with vandals.)
