Kelly's in Allston opens this morning

At Harvard and Comm. Ave., Allston City Limits reports. No word if they're importing seagulls from Revere to throw French fries to.

There's a rat for that.

Who's less shy, the gulls in Revere or the rats in Allston?

We went to a soft opening on Monday night. It's a great restaurant, so go! It's set up really good, inside, lots of registers and plenty of seats (but why do they have a flat-screen TV if it's stuck on the side?).

The owners and managers were all there. They told me that there will be a paid detail (cop) outside the store every Friday and Saturday night. I questioned whether this was b/c of the city or neighbors' complaints but they said they do it for all their shops. This is great for that area - the added cop will police the whole block making it safer and easier to report crimes in progress.

They said they have no interest in asking for an extension in closing time, right now. They said "you get a different crowd" after 2 AM.

They originally wanted to stay open until 3 a.m. But the Allston Civic Association screamed bloody murder and the licensing board gave them 2 a.m. (and of course, that started the dreaded slippery slope because now, gasp, the McDonald's across the street has permission to stay open until 2).

I'm willing to bet that detail cop is not going to be policing the block. He will be doing whatever Kelly's wants him to do. And I bet that will be standing in the store to deter people from looking for trouble after hours.

The few times I had a reason to be at the Medford Kelly's late in the evening, there wasn't a cop there.

Maybe they meant "we do it at all our stores...that stay open past 1 am" (in other words, only the one in Revere).

Sounds like the manager didn't know what they were talking about and were just blowing smoke up John's rear.

Well, you can say and believe whatever you'd like. I've read that about the Allston/Brighton neighbors which is why I asked him about it. Also, he said there are detail cops at each location but yes perhaps he meant past 1 AM.

Who to believe? Second-hand information or information directly from the source?

1- Every available officer was called for a detail and they could not fill the detail.

2- The detail officer was on break, sitting in his car, going to the bathroom, sitting in another part of the store, getting a coffee etc.

Pro: Kelly's is pretty good food and I don't have to go all the way to Medford or Framingham if I want it now.

Con: People used to park 4-5 cars in a row along the T tracks on the Comm Ave access road just to do take-out from Marty's. I can't imagine the nightmare of that lane now as everyone runs inside to pick up food.

back in the day they always had a cop sitting inside rileys.they used to close off the section of seating and it was strictly takeout. the cops always seemed uninterested in anything that was happening outside the doors of the place. the greasers and the socs would be pummeling each other in the middle of harvard and brighton aves and the cop would just sit in rileys, up near the counter, making sure there was no trouble INSIDE the place. cop or no cop there was almost always a fight in the foodline on weekend nights.

They got busted later on their opening day for not having a common victualler's license or an entertainment license - oopsie!

Something just wasn't right about it. I know they have a common victualler's license - they got it last year after the licensing board rolled back the closing time they wanted from 3 to 2 a.m. You're supposed to put your license up on the wall somewhere where it's visible; maybe they just hadn't done that yet.

As for the entertainment license, um, yeah. Legally, you're not supposed to play music without a license (and not from the licensing board, but from the entertainment board; if nothing else, Boston is world class at bureaucracy). Opening night, they probably had a radio or CD player going.

Yeah, I figured they probably had at least the victualler's license but didn't have it displayes. Clearly seems like The Authorities throwing their weight around.
