The mystery of Rojo
By adamg on Thu, 06/28/2007 - 8:52am
Rojo is this largish gas station/car wash/detailing joint on Rte. 1 south in Norwood. And every time I go there (to wash the car) or just pass by, there are always long lines at the gas pumps. Why? They don't have particularly good prices. Are they giving out free candy or something?

Its convenient from a lot of directions.
When I used to live in Walpole, I wound up going to Rojo frequently, even when my jobs changed and I'd be driving home from different places.
If you are traveling off of 128 and heading towards Norwood, Walpole, etc. it is one of the first gas stations off the highway. (I think there is one rather sketchy looking gas station before it, near the sketchy looking hotel. For some reason it is small enough and awkwardly placed that I miss it or it looks like the one or two pumps they have are in use)
If you are working around the office buildings University Ave or in Westwood, it is the first convenient gas station on the way home.
After one event, I stopped going there late at night when it was quiet. When I went to the payment booth I apparently was interrupting the young man who was the cashier. While I was trying to pay for my purchase, an embarrassed looking young woman crawled out from underneath the booth desk.
Gas wasn't the only thing being pumped
That's the place with all the preachy stuff around (Bible verses and etc...).
It's got some of the better gas prices on Route 1 South. Searching for the cheapest gas is one of the ways I amuse myself during my commute.
Rojo
They always charge less than any other stations in the area. They were charging $2.87 a few weeks ago when everyone else was over $3, for instance. I think they have a surlyness requirement for their employees, though.
On a side note, one of the most reliable, honest car mechanics around has opened up a shop in one of the service bays in the Rojo complex, Mechanical Engineering Automotive (Jon Goldberg). Not related to him in any way, but I've been going to him in his Dedham Manor location since the '80s when I lived on that street, and I kept going after I moved to Canton.
Apologies on the prices, then
Maybe I'm getting some other Rte. 1 places confused with the Hess stations in West Roxbury (but I could've sworn their prices were about the same as the nearby Shell on the other side of Rte. 1).
Actually, my first trip to Rojo was a few weeks ago for a car wash (I was in the area, anyway). I was at the head of the line when I noticed a police cruiser pull up. Then a couple more. Then the cops all got out and surrounded and cuffed the attendent, who said, "Man, I been workin'!" Then they took him away. None of the other attendants seemed to know why.
