It's actually a very smart move by the Red Sox GM. Tampa has been eyeballing Damon and we're still in a wild card battle with them. By putting in a claim we ensure that no matter what neither Tampa nor NY can get him.
And even if we got stuck with him, unlikely as Damon has a no trade clause listing Boston, there's a spot for him in the outfield. I say that being a big fan of Bill Hall, but veteran status has its merits.
Not picked up - claimed. Detroit can revoke the waivers. Otherwise, they can try to work out a trade with the Red Sox. Or, they can let the Sox have him. But they won't just let the Sox have him. Virtually every player with any significant contract has been passed through waivers (or has been claimed) in the past 3 weeks.
Why wouldn't they just let the Sox have him? It's $1.8 million the Tigers wouldn't have to pay him.
Ironically, the Sox may have to cough something up to Damon to get him to waive his no-trade (if they really want him and aren't just trying to block NY or TB).
Well, they might. But they don't have to. They can almost surely get a PTBNL for him if they just ask. The Sox would love him: With 18 meaningless games coming up at home, they're going to really work to keep the sellout streak alive.
That said, of course I'd forgive him. He's one of the 25. I was there at the first Damon Yankee game (also the Doug Mirabelli Escort Game), and booed heartily. But I was booing the laundry, not the man.
Every one of the 25 is always welcome back, as long as they're not wearing a Yankee uniform.
For him to walk out on the field in a Red Sox uniform, throw out the first pitch then walk off to applause. That done, he grows his hair out, moves to California and in a few years gets into the hall of fame.
I was angry at him for following the money, but I also realize that he did what was best for his wallet, not mine.
The one thing I don't want is for him to return, then retire at the end of the season. That's what Mick Lowell plans on doing and I don't want Damon to over shadow his last year.
3000 hits might get a guy in if he is clean. damons name has come up several times over the course of his career as being a "steroids guy" so it could go either way.
There are 85 guys ahead of him on the all time hits list, a number of whom are also active players. I don't see him getting there on the strength of hitting alone. And he has never won any accolades for his fielding. Even if he makes 3,000, which would require at least two more really good seasons, I don't think he has a chance. Just a sample of some of the active names ahead of him:
Many Ramirez
Alex Rodriguez
Derek Jeter
These three have a good shot, but in each case they bring more to the plate. Damon won't have 500 home runs, he won't have any Gold Gloves and he won't have a career .300 average. Rodriguez has all of these things, and the other two have two of three.
There are actually only 5 active players ahead of him with more hits, but if he gets 3000 he would be in. I don't see him going it since he would probably have to hit over .300 to get there anyway. He has a .288 career average and that isn't going to do it with less than 3000 hits.
But Jeter, Arod and Manny are all locked for the Hall of Fame pending any steroid issues. All three have the numbers.

If he has a contract that expires in December 2012 we are all in trouble ;-)

Depending on how many years he has left he has a small chance.
