Okay, so does anyone know where(or if) I can buy a formalin (formaldehyde) solution locally? I'm not a funeral director, scientist, or student, I'm just interested in preserving a pet frog who died of old age.
Naturally, helpful LJers suggest alternatives to the powerful chemical, including brandy and freezing - although Morbidqua advises against the latter, because of the possibility of power outages or changes of address:
I froze my favorite pet fish years ago in my Allston apartment. It's NOT a good way to preserve a dead pet. Go for Rum or one of the alcohol based or resin based preservation methods.

A clear plastic block could
A clear plastic block could work, much like amber.
If you go to a hobby store, one especially with trains, they'll have a box of plastic beads that people usually use to make "lakes" with. You heat it up in a can slowly, and it becomes goopy and clear, then solidifies clear on whatever you put it. Maybe make a nice little froggy coffin mold, and pour it on over him?
Decoupage?
Might be better without the heat processes. You still probably want to soak it in brandy first.
Use an epoxy resin (aka decoupour) that you mix in two parts and that solidifies clear.
When I worked in a Materials Science laboratory, we used to mount cockroaches this way and then file them with the rest of the stuff for others to find.
