Ed Kelly heads up a firefighters union again

Ed Kelly, who led Boston firefighters through a long and bruising contract battle with the city, was appointed interim president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts today.

He succeeds Robert B. McCarthy of Watertown, who had been president for the past 23 years.

The statewide union will hold final elections for a new president in two months. Kelly is running for the post.
