Amazing: Somebody actually listens to Tom Finneran

Otherwise, how else would we know about him saying if he'd been Britney Spears's manager in Las Vegas, he would have slapped her in the face?

... Diva? You know what she'd be if I was there waiting for 4 1/2 hours? She'd be a diva with a black eye. I'd give her a dope slap. ...

Is he married? His wife should bitch-slap him across the room for that comment.

He's not saying you should beat your wife, girlfriend, rich pop singer, ect.... but that she needs someone to straiten her out before it's too late (even if in his rather bohemian language).

Way to blow a non-story outta proportion!

a couple of years back bob ryan from the globe was suspended for saying someone should smack jason kidd's wife.jason kidd had been arrested the year before for a domestic battery and the celtics were playing the nj nets in the playoffs.someone came up with the idea of waving "wifebeater" t shirts and chanting wifebeater.kidds wife got all pissed off and said some stuff about boston fans and ryan made his statement in regards to what she said.he got trashed for saying it so why shouldnt mr convicted felon get the same treatment?i dont think its a big deal but i love bob ryan and if he was punished than mr finneran should be punished too.

I agree with you there, but with the Kid's it was a little inappropriate because of the fact that Jason is a wife beater, and his wife was smacked around. It was almost as if they were validating it, making it seem she "deserved" it, because just look at how upset she got during the game.

Finneran's comment seems totally different, much like when people say misbehaving children should get "the sense smacked into them". Does that mean they should get beaten into submission nowadays? No, but it does mean they should get treated in the same way their actions warrant.

Gary LaPierre used to hand out daily "dope slaps" on WBZ, but not a single one of them ever involved him proposing to give someone a black eye. Finneran might want to give LaPierre a call.

To OhhhComeON!: Listen, it's just never funny or amusing to go on the public airwaves and talk about smacking women around, giving them black eyes, or what have you. Similarly, as Don Imus will now attest - don't go on the airwaves and call African American athletes sluts and other unnecessary derogatory terms. It's pretty simple and straightforward. You want to talk to your friends about smacking sense into your own kids? Feel free buddy - no one's stopping you.

You can't make a blanket statement asserting that something is "never funny". Humor, like beauty, is in the (in this case, perhaps black) eye of the beholder.

Finneran's comment was certainly in what is now considered poor taste by many. Fine. You can safely assume that if enough people complain about it, he'll get what's coming to him. But, for goodness' sakes, don't try to tell us all what's funny and what isn't. That's up to me to decide - or you, as an individual.

And he wasn't talking about "smacking women around". He was saying that one woman in particular needed to acquire more sense. There's a HUGE difference there.

What I have stated is my opinion. It is clearly a subjective personal opinion. That was implied. Furthermore, this is not me vs. 'you all'... that makes no sense. My comment was directed to OhhhComeON.

Even Wendy Murphy agreed with this assessment on WRKO today.

When people go around sanctimoniously saying that X-and-such is "never funny," there's a good chance it's often hilarious.

That said, Finneran's schtick is kinda tired. Imus's, quadruply so.

Until you have picked up your best friend from the ER because her boyfriend beat the ever loving crap out of her, DO NOT CALL ME SANCTIMONIOUS for saying it is not okay to joke about giving a woman a black eye and slapping her for a poor singing performance! I'm done.

Picking up your best friend from the ER because her boyfriend beat the ever loving crap out of her is, indeed, sad.

Saying it is not okay to joke about giving a woman a black eye and slapping her for a poor singing performance is, if not sanctimonious, at least slightly ridiculous.

Do you fail to see that there is a major difference between the two? Unless your friend was beaten because of a lousy singing performance, there is little correlation. One is truly a tragedy, the other is a JOKE.

It seems you had some serious psychic buttons pushed by the confluence of your unfortunate experience and Finneran's very poor choice of words. I truly do sympathize, having supported some causes fervently and been shot down often enough to begin feeling as though I wasn't being given a fair hearing.

However, you are taking a dog and a cat, and saying that they are the same because they both have four legs and hair. It is a vapid comparison. You are doing little to advance the cause you obviously care deeply about. Such polemics polarize many of the people who might be more sympathetic to abuse issues if there weren't so many of your stripe who seemingly don't understand the difference between trivial banter and real violence.

Now I'm done.

It IS sanctimonious.

Lots of terrible things are funny. That's the whole point of funny; to make the terrible things endurable. You want to see this in action, go hang out on a cancer ward sometime. Cancer is funny. Murder also. War, same thing. Violence against women, totally funny. Racism, your house burning down, getting mugged, losing your parents: funny, funny, funny, and funny. I believe this as though it were a religion, and it has saved my life.

I'm not really championing Tom Finneran though. He's not that funny.

The Gotcha sanctimoniousness is at least as bad as the original comment, which was casual foolishness, and nothing all of us have said in some manner at some time. The complaints just belittle the real issue when it comes up.
