AlertNewEngland tweets a person was held up tonight at Boylston and Burr streets in Jamaica Plain.
The suspect, described as a stocky Hispanic man, showed a knife handle and threatened to stab the victim unless cash was handed over quickly.
Around 9 p.m., Benjamin tweeted watching police cuff and cart away a possible suspect, in a yellow or orange shirt, at Washington and School streets on the other side of the Orange Line.

Hi- am wondering about this

Hi- am wondering about this report- I am a female, was held up at Boylston & Burr at 8pm this evening- same description of the offender. Reported to police, just back from the station. Am wondering if this is a different incident or the same, wondering where the info on this came from. Only difference is the time (30min) and gender of victim. Just curious if there was another victim...
Probably the same

I got it from AlertNewEngland, who listens to the police scanner even more than I do. He didn't mention gender; I stupidly filled that in. His original tweet was around 8:30; although he usually posts almost right after something goes out on the scanner, it's possible he heard something later than the time it happened.
Because of your note, I've edited my post.
More important though, how are you doing? That must've been awful.
I've had two mugging attempts

I've had two mugging attempts in the last few years that got to the point of showing a weapon. Had a few likely others that I shook off before then.
Separate from the feeling of violation of a successful mugging, and the emotions about having your stuff taken, you might have some adrenaline in your system. If you have to get up early, try to relax, and don't assume you'll get your usual solid night's sleep. If you're late to work, you have a good excuse.
So sorry

Mugging

They did say it was a female victim. I believe they said an iPhone or iPod was taken, so if that sounds like you, it probably was. They also said they were transporting the female victim to the station. The time discrepancy is probably due to the fact that I don't tweet it out until the officer you spoke to arrived on scene and relayed the information back to dispatch.
On a personal note, I'm sorry you had to go through something like that, and I'm glad you weren't hurt!
let the muggings commence

Every year as the weather turns warm, the hoodlums come out of the woodwork and start mugging people on Boylston.
Hopefully the idiots at E13 can get their act together this year, unlike last year when they were caught with their pants down a couple of times (like when they were interviewing one dude who'd been mugged and meanwhile someone got mugged a couple blocks down the street...and they didn't catch anyone.)
Indeed...

I thought one needed a firearms ID or permit to have mace/pepper spray in MA?
Yeah...

Like one needs a permit to carry a concealed weapon? Oh, wait...my comment about purchasing pepper spray was tongue in cheek, but becomes less so with each daytime/early evening mugging that happens within two blocks of my house.
I am surprised no one has blamed Whole Foods for this mugging (and every other social ill in the Stony Brook hood). Clearly the anti-WF contingent resents WF's pending arrival and are attempting to exact their revenge on me and my yuppie brethren, one iPod and nearly empty wallet at a time.
To legally carry pepper spray

To legally carry pepper spray in Mass you need at minimum a Mass Restricted FID Card.
An FID card lets anyone over the age of 18 who is not a convicted felon purchase, possess and transport NON-LARGE CAPACITY RIFLES, SHOTGUNS and AMMUNITION ONLY. (Handguns require a different license) One needs to take a required gun safety course and it's 100.00 for a 6 year permit.
In Mass. they also issue a "restricted" FID card for the sole purpose of possessing pepper spray. The gun safety course is not required for this and I believe it is no charge...maybe a few bucks to process.
This recent mugging took place 2 streets up from my house. There have been many incedents of muggings and assaults in that area over the years I've lived there. I've thwarted/evaded at least one robbery attempt on me. My downstairs neighbor was robbed at gunpoint in front of our house at 11pm one night. A little over a year ago there were 5 people robbed at gunpoint on Boylston (between City feed and Centre St)in one night. Also last summer I believe, there was a girl assualted and robbed for her backpack on Paul Gore St. It seems like a very quiet safe area but it has it's problems.
Pepper spray is a non-lethal chemical formula widely used for self-defense that contains the active ingredient Oleoresin Capsicum (“OC”), a derivative of hot chili peppers. Because it is inflammatory (making hard to see, breathe, swallow), rather than an irritant like tear gas, pepper spray is more effective against those who feel less pain such as psychotics, drunks and drug abusers.
All OC contains a powerful substance, an alkaloid called capsaicin Most pepper spray brands contain 10% - 18%.
HALT spray for dogs contains 1% in there strongest spray available. You're liable to get false confidence from this product and may only aggrivate an attacker with it.
If you feel the desire to arm yourself with pepper spray..do it legally...take the 5 minutes to fill out the forms, and get yourself a quality defense product. I personally carry the Spitfire. http://www.spitfire.us/index.htm
It's much more concealable & ergonomically correct for your hand unlike than the traditional style spray bottles.
Even with pepper spray you need to be very careful. if you're surrounded by multiple attackers it's best to just give them what they want...use the pepper if they continue an attack. If someone flashes a gun at you it's best to give them what they want and hope for the best. Pepper vs. Gun....gun wins!
Only use pepper spray when you can do so safely, with the element of surprise, and with the confidence that you can deter the attacker(s)long enough to make an escape/run for help. The cops won't have a hard time finding the perp as he will be stumbling around the street temporarily blinded and gagging.
Good luck and stay safe!

Yes they could have done something and not called to let me know... or they could have done nothing and didn't call either..... Or they could have done something and called. There are lots of options and scenarios. One has to assume after being told we would be contacted and then never contacted nothing was done. I really don't understand your persistence on this matter. You were not involved. No one pulled a knife on you or your husband/wife.

oh well.
My persistence on this matter is that I have worked with investigations like this and have seen first hand that 99% of serious situations like this will have through followups. Something could have fallen through the crack on this one but that is just my experience.
