How you can tell you've entered JP's Little Amsterdam

If you call the "Cash 4 Your Warhol" number, you get an answering machine and then about 20 minutes later it leaves you a nice message saying, "Cash 4 Your Warhol loves you!"

I've seen those 'Cash for your Warhol' signs around Somerville and Medford, too, and wondered about them. (Not in Dutch, however.)

Ironically, I found when I was in Amsterdam last year that most of the signs seemed to be in English. This was definitely not true, however, in other parts of the Netherlands.

When I took a bike tour through both countries in 1984, I noticed that movie titles on billboards were in English in the Netherlands, but were translated into German in Germany.

Keep in mind that it costs money to translate the dialogue into each local language. Subtitles are much cheaper, if only because multiple voice actors aren't necessary.

With that in mind, larger markets get translated versions, smaller markets get subtitles. There are roughly 20 million Dutch speakers in the Netherlands & Belgium, compared to something like 120 million German speakers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (and around 190 million French speakers in France & elsewhere).

Bigger countries get their own versions, but smaller ones do not, unless the movie studios can justify it economically.

I always thought "Cash for your Warhol" was a clever way of saying "We'll pay you cash for 15 minutes of your time" - you know, perhaps in exchange for filling out surveys or something. But no, it turns out to be literal - cash for your Warhol. I'm kind of disappointed.

It is bad enough to have to see businesses, and I use the term rather loosely, post ads on telephone poles...now this "artist" who is trying to make his statement.

Note to Geoff Hargadon: If people don't get your art, if they have to try real hard to try to figure out what the heck you are saying in your art, whether it is a "visual gag" or a "funny parody", you you are just creating, well, trash.

And, yes, I would be one of the many who have no idea what the heck the trash post was about.

again, I still stand by my original assertion that "art" should be done with the intent that most people "get it". Not just a few "in the know", which, apparently, includes yourself. So I just see it as trash on a pole.

I am glad you, personally, found it "funny and though provoking." Apparently I do not have the intellectual heft to find it so.
