Jamaica Plain store wins right to sell beer and wine
The Boston Licensing Board today gave City Feed and Supply a license to sell beer and wine at its Centre Street location.
At a hearing yesterday, store lawyer Joseph Hanley said the store would stock a small selection of "craft beers and good quality wines," for people to pair with the locally sourced organic foods they're picking up for dinner. "It's a different experience than Blanchard's," he said. "It's intended to be an amenity, not a package store."
The mayor's office and the offices of district City Councilor Matt O'Malley and state Rep. Jeff Sanchez all supported the proposal, as did the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council. Nobody spoke in opposition.

Thank god this isn't in the
Thank god this isn't in the Allston Civic Association's jurisdiction...
I look forward to this store being allowed to sell legal goods to me.
I kinda find this funny. It
I kinda find this funny. It reminds me of the Johnnie's Foodmaster in Inman Square (the 1st Johnnies)
TINY store, and a good chunk of it is Beer and Wine. It seems to me that they kinda forgot about selling food and focused on Beer and Wine. (its about 60% of the store now)
Considering how vocal City Feed is about Whole Foods, and some heat they've taken over how pricey they compared to other grocers in the area.. You'd think their PRIME focus would be FOOD and keeping prices in line with Whole Foods, rather than selling Beer and Wine. *shrug*
60% of sales maybe
No where near 60% of the store.
You clearly never find your way back to the grocery section, which is every bit as well stocked - if chaotic - as the old Foodmaster next to the West Medford Commuter Rail station used to be.
I've never had a problem finding cat food or lactose free milk there - the two things I tend to be asked to pick up on my way home.
maybe now Warner can stop bankrolling Whose Foods
and STFU about Whole Foods opening.
Competition is healthy.
speaking of STFU
why don't you quit making stuff up about who is "bankrolling" Whose Foods. The dude is a longtime friend of mine and he is having nothing to do with it.
riiight, nothing to do with it
I bet he's a long time friend of yours - you probably see him everytime you look in a mirror.
Warner's only spoken against Whole Foods at public forums, albeit in a mealy-mouthed way.
He also could not restrain himself from commenting positively, but again in a wishy-washy way, when the Whose Foods website was launched, see here: http://jamaicaplain.patch.com/articles/opponents-o...
City Feed is a prominently listed "like" on the Whose Foods Facebook page.
http://www.facebook.com/whosefoods
He also put "Wanted" posters of John Mackey, the CEO of Whole Foods in his stores.
Hey, I don't blame him, Whole Foods is a threat to his business. Now that he can sell beer and wine, he'll cut into Blanchard's business.
It would be great if Blanchard's organized a group complaining about the proliferation of alcohol merchants to stop City Feed.
Facebook "Like" /= "bankrolling"
Right--Dave's entitled to not want Whole Foods to move in, and to speak against it. But there's no basis to claim he is "bankrolling" Whose Foods, and he makes his position clear in the Patch comment you referenced:
"On the point of me being a "main organizer" of the Whose Foods group, I am not. I am on their e-mail list. I have spoken a couple of times with some of the organizers. I have not attended any of their organizational meetings. I have also spoken with folks who support Whole Foods coming. I do want to be a part of the discussion. I am happy to listen to any one's point of view and willing to respond to any one who is willing to listen."
I think that makes it pretty clear, unless you are calling him a liar, in which case this conversation is over.
For the record, I'm a lot shorter than David and I'm not opposed to Whole Foods moving in. But neither am I opposed to people organizing against it. Even though I don't agree with Whose Foods' rhetoric or tactics, I don't suspect some shadowy conspiracy of vested interests. I see a bunch of neighbors who are concerned about an issue and have organized themselves. What is so threatening about that?
City Feed
Stop trying to gentrify my white wine purchases. I will stick to the people's wine store, thank you very much.
People's Wine Store
aka Trader Joe's.
Three Buck Chuck - gotta love it!
Amenity?
Does this mean that they don't plan on stocking the neon-colored bottles of MD 20/20?
Well, sniff, they've lost my business!
