How many pictures of the Christian Science Center do we really need? In my first photography class the professor went nuts. Her stimulus? Someone submitted a picture of the Christian Science Center to be critiqued and graded. At the time I thought, "Wow, what's her problem?". Now, I understand.

They are nice pictures, just way overdone.

This isn't a photography class, where subject, composition, etc. matter ... its a local interest blog where interesting local photos get some eyespace.

There are plenty of other landmarks in Boston to share and see.

And in point of fact this is a rather different photo of the Christian Science center. What's far more common is pictures of the Mother Church or the Pru reflected in the pool. Those are done all the time, although I continue to shoot them when I get the chance. But this is one I haven't actually seen before and is nice new take on the fountain.

...one is challenged to do something different or better than the norm. It would seem this photographer has done that. If your teacher would sniff at THIS picture, so much the worse for your teacher.

photography professor from which institution?

This particular location is right near the Northeastern campus. So photo students typically walk the extremely short distance, and start shooting pictures right there at the Christian Science Center.

Boston has tons and tons of landmarks which are awesome to photograph. A few months/weeks back. UH had a good amount of night photos from around the area, these were cool, and they were all different sites. This picture isn't bad, I'm just hoping to see more variety.

Dear Anon:

You want variety, head to Flickr or Google and search for Boston.
You are harping on a picture that is beautifully framed and has refreshing (pun intended) take on an over photographed venue.
As others said above you're complaining because you can.

Just because something is overdone for you, doesn't mean it's overdone for everybody else. This blog features photos of all kinds.
Finally, you can always close the browser, and step away from the computer and take a walk. You get to see the different sites with your own eyes.

and here's some links to satisfy your need for variety:

Amen, sister/brother!! This IS a beautiful city. And to the first anonymous poster: just because this photo's beauty is lost on you, doesn't mean it's lost on the rest of us. Also, one of the first lessons I got from my college education was that you can learn from someone (such as a professor) without adopting his/her opinions.

If that zealous park ranger from the Frog Pond had been around, the photographer would have been prohibited from taking this photograph.

I've had a good experience with the Christian Science docents on that issue. I try not to take photos when the kids are playing for reasons of propriety but one night after dark I was taking some shots of the fountain with the Pru and 111 Huntington in the background. Even though it was fairly late there were still a couple of kids playing. One of the docents came over and said "Make sure you don't take pictures of the kids." I explained that I was taking photos of the Pru and offered to show him and he said "Oh, I know, I see how you've got the camera pointed, just be careful cause some people get really freaked out if they think you're taking photos of their kids." I thought that was a much better way to handle it than the Frog Pond guy did. And unlike at the Frog Pond the Christian Science center is presumably private property and so they could kick your ass out if they wanted to.

i still wouldn't call that a good experience. if you are discouraged from making art because of the way people might freak out, then the people that tell you that are supporting the freaking out of those people, and add to the environment in which photography is controlled and restricted.

A couple of things intrigue me about this photo.

1. The sky is white while the water is blue. That's an interesting contrast. Does the water apply a polarizing effect?

2. I would like to see the photo without people as well as with. The contrast between passive and active compositions would be interesting.

If anyone is interested in the combination of photos of Boston and music watch and listen to the Youtube piece of A Far Cry quartet performing at TEDxBoston. Pleasing photos of Boston are projected while A Far Cry quartet plays what I figure is a modern piece. While many of the sites were recognizable (at nearly a daily rate) seeing the photos in this context gave me a different appreciation of the sites.
