Boston Police report that when a cabbie tried to rouse a fare, passed out in the back of the cab at the end of a ride from North Station shortly before midnight last night, he found himself under attack:
... [T]he suspect became very violent when he tried to wake him up, kicked him in the face, and then proceeded to punch the victim in the face. ...
Police gave Brendan Collins another ride - to District 14, where he was booked on charges of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and possession of marijuana.
Also yesterday: Police no doubt gave Jacinto Abdalah, 38, of Quincy, points for honesty when they asked him what he was doing there at East Berkeley St. and Harrison Ave. around 7:30 p.m., because he replied: "Rolling a joint." They replied by putting him under arrest - after which they discovered he was wanted for armed robbery and assault with intent to murder.
And a resident of Greenwich Street in Dorchester came home to find a burglar calmly removing stuff from her house, putting it in a van and then going back in for more. Police arrived and calmly arrested Tho T. Tran, 44, of Dorchester, on a charge of breaking and entering (and another of driving after suspension).

Maybe Brendans neighbors have never come over to introduce themselves? I cant think of any other reason for this type of behavior.
No sympathy here!!

Unless you're just being snarky, bostnkid, the above-mentioned notion is absolutely no excuse for someone's being rip-roaring drunk and assaulting a cab-driver with no provocation. He deserved to be jailed, and maybe Brendan's neighbors don't come over to introduce themselves because they're fearful of him.
Um ...

I do believe he's referring to stuff like this, in which some BU students in Brookline blamed residents for problems with noise.
It's the hack's fault

It wasn't the neighbors' fault in this case, it was the cabbie's. He never introduced himself when Brendan got in his hack. The cabbie was lucky that Brendan didn't yell profanities loudly and relieve himself in the back seat. I mean c'mon, Brendan is just trying to have some fun and enjoy the college lifestyle.
C'mon now...must a cabbie inroduce him/herself to a fare?

To say that the cabbie should've introduced himself when Brendan got in the taxi-cab is ludicrous, imo. Since when is it necessary for a cab-drive to introduce him/herself to a customer? That's ridiculous, imo. Brendan was trying to have fun and enjoy a college lifestyle.....Oh, yeah...Brendan got riproaring drunk and punched the cab-driver in the face...An idea of fun!! Yelling profanities and relieving oneself in the backseat of the cab wouldn't have been nearly as bad...maybe Brendan wouldn't have been charged with unprovoked assault and locked up. It's Brendan's own doing.
Have you checked your sarcasm meter lately?

I think it needs new batteries.

I'm being sarcastic, because that stupid comment/excuse about Brendan Collins' hanging out and enjoying the "college lifestyle" doesn't even start to hold water.
I give up

You're expressing outrage about a clearly sarcastic comment, as if the author of that statement intended it to be serious.

Good one, bostnkid. This one gave me a nice chuckle.

This kid should be kicked out of school and sent to prison, obviously.
BUT, let's say hypothetically that the cabbie had picked up Brendan after watching him kick another cabbie in the head on a drunken rampage, but figured $20 is $20 and gave it a shot.
In such a situation of course his action would be no less agregious but I for one would be a little less sympathetic to the cabbie.
The actions of drunk college undergrads are of course largely idiotic, but really I have trouble feeling sorry for people who move into a neighborhood next to a college campus and then get all NIMBY when they realize why every other Brookline address is more expensive..... I've lived exclusively in university towns since I graduated high school 12 years ago, and this is a situation that has popped up in every single one.

While I see your point about the above-mentioned quote from your post, it's clearly moot, because it didn't happen that way.
Secondly, I have trouble feeling sorry for the out-of-control, rip-roaring drunk undergrad college kids who doi vandalism, play their music full-blast and scream and yell until all hours of the morning keeping their neighbors awake and then end up being visited by the cops and possibly getting arrested or whatever because they went way overboard. Here's why: If they're old enough to go to college, they're old enough to have some respect and consideration for their neighbors who need to go to work, etc., the next morning.
Thirdly, I went to coillege back in the mid-1970's through the early 1980's, and, although I attended some boisterous parties back then, and lived near loud buildings, it wasn't nearly as bad as it is right now, and the parties I attended never, ever were visited by the cops for getting out of hand.

What about families that have been in the same place for over 70 years? The price for houses went up so high families couldnt afford so landlords started buying the houses around you. The next thing you know the "neghborhood" you once knew is now a bunch of college slum houses? you go out every weekend and rake leaves and mow your lawn only to find broken bottles and empty chinese food containers on your front steps? you buy a new car and come out on a monday morning to find footprints across your hood and maybe a smashed sideview mirror? Are you having any problem feeling sorry for me? my 93 year old grandmother? the one who is afraid to open her windows during the summer or sit out on her porch? I understand your point. If i was looking to buy a condo i probably would not buy one on sutherland road and expect everyone to be quiet for me.im talking about groups of students coming into nice neighborhoods and spreading from one house to the next like a fast moving cancer.i just bought a house this weekend and ill be leaving soon but its too bad. I wanted to raise my kids in the house i grew up in but i guess we have to make way fo the idiotic brendans of the wolrd.
