Walked into South Station around 1 p.m. and it was like walking into a wall of buttered-popcorn smell. Beats the alternative, I guess, but still kind of odd, especially since the station's sponsor this month is some scotch rather than some popcorn brand.

When I walked into the station yesterday, yeah, smelled just like grilled cheese.
Cheeseboy!
But today, it was like one of those department-store perfume spritzers was standing at the entrance spraying everybody with popcorn butter-like yellow liquid. Also see the comment below.
Don't fret though.

Once Dewars realizes their expensive "saturation bombing" campaign( North Station is plastered (pardon the pun) with all sorts of signs and banners as well) has failed, you'll never see their advertising on the T again.
Which only proves two points:
1) "Station domination" is a truly idiotic program if one wants repeat advertising business from companies, and
2) Advertising revenue is not, nor will it ever be, a truly reliable means of funding the MBTA.

There's a new popcorn vendor over by the platforms. You can smell the fumes as far away as the street-side entrances. My habit of occasionally getting lunch at the food court there will probably be seriously curtailed.

I was never a fan of popcorn smell either, especially the smell of microwaved popcorn.
It's probably not the popcorn itself you're smelling

but the artifical "butter wannabee" coating used in most microwave popcorn.
Yes, our office has this issue too.

and are compelled buy popcorn every single time we come across that scent. It is a very good thing that I rarely have reason to be in South Station.

There was a movie theatre in the old South Station. Maybe a time warp?

Ground floor of Macy's

On a similar note, the ground floor of Macy's at DTX, specifically the men's department, continuously has a sort of roasted chicken smell. It turns out this smell eminates from the food vendors outside, preumably the ones on Summer Street. It is so strong it seems to be coming from inside the building itself.

yeah or it could be from the men that have sex there, or the smelly guys that shoot up in there (no joke, Macys is notorious for this)
There's also a firedoor near that bathroom and makes me wonder if one of the cook rooms for the vendors is nearby outside of it.,
