No doubt there's an excellent reason why the people putting on tonight's family fireworks at 7 p.m. on the Common didn't want First Night to include information about them in their schedule or even answer questions about them, so just because I can't think of what that reason might be doesn't mean it's not perfectly sane and reasonable.

I know that, in past years when we went to see the fireworks, they have sometimes had to move people around and change the set up locations to make sure the wind doesn't blow them where they ought not go.
Makes some sense to get info on where to go/stand from an updated source? (doesn't explain why they can't update info on the web, though ...)
And the organizers of the fireworks would be ...

Boston 4 Productions, the people who put on the July 4th Esplanade fireworks. Maybe they don't want actual people there because there won't be actual fireworks - just CGI fireworks on NECN, which will be broadcasting them.

I'd like to think that the reason is because they didn't want me to know anything about them so I couldn't call them on these being faked somehow too.
I know it has nothing to do with me, but I like to think this is all my fault in some way anyways.

Saw them last night from Boylston Street in front of the Public Garden. (We've learned over the years not to actually enter the Public Garden or Common, because it can be hell trying to get out again afterwards.)

Where there any tonight? I heard a few booms at 6.50pm and when I went outside I couldn't hear or see anything (I live about a mile from the Common).
Yep, fireworks!

This has been the case for the last several years. I think it might be that the Mugar Foundation and the other sponsors do not want people to think that the First Night org is responsible for the early "family fireworks".
It has caused a brief panic in our household in past years, but at this point we know to google "family fireworks boston first night", to check.
Btw, NECN is airing the early fireworks program this year.
