That's the former Queen of Apostles seminary building in Dedham that NU purchased in the early 1980s. It's not ugly unless lousy photography is factored in. The actual Boston NU campus is a lot better than it was when I went there and had to park in a mud puddle and climb over a raised train line to get to a building where you could tell which way the creaky elevator was moving by seeing the cable through a hole in the wall.

As someone who graduated from RIT, I don't understand how it is not universally considered the ugliest campus in the US.

What a pointless blog. This person looks at 10 photos of buildings on a website, then judges the beauty of the campus.
It's funny how he rip's
It's funny how he rip's UMASS-A, yet shows a pretty good looking grassy hill and the Northeastern Dorms area (colonial buildings). It's actually a very nice area on campus that both provides housing and a place to chill outside.
You'd think he'd be talking about the majority of the inner campus, with old crap "soviet" style concrete buildings built in an era where blocky, dull, and unimaginative was in as "art". They really should just raze the campus center, fine arts building, and southwest living area and start new. They pedestrian and functionally unfriendly, and an eye sore.
But he over looks that and describes one of the nicest areas of any campus I've been on...

that's central the photo shows, though it looks really similar to northeast. and has anyone else seen the new dorms in north? they're beautiful!
the center of campus, on the other hand, is hideous. the FAC, the student union... the power plant. hideous.

I thought it was coming down from Sylvan at first, but I can see there's no road in the pictures next to the closest building.
And yes, many of the new-er buldings going up are spectacular. The new apartment dorms on the old Sylvan hill, the new science and buissness buildings, ect.
Amherst? What about UMess Anywhere?
Amherst is much better than UMass Lowell! Especially the boring educational campus, red brick blah main campus that lacks signage, and the uglitary-industrial North Campus, whose crowning jewel is the largest LEU nuke in the country.
Until recently, the same "building code" comments made about Carnege Mellon would apply to UMass Lowell - or even Salem State or Fitchburg State - in spades. We were told to duck when closing doors so if ceiling bits fell we might not get hurt. That was the answer to complaints of falling crap and floors that were popping up tile-by-tile.

At least with UMass Amherst, the natural scenery is beautiful. The same can't be said for UMass Lowell... though Lowell has it's own industrial / old mill charms.
Just glad that I attended both of them years ago when it was still cheap to get a degree from a state school. I'd rather have an ugly campus and walk away with a solid education and no debts than pay a fortune to live in million dollar dorms with pretty landscaping and walk away with essentially the equivalent education and an $80K debt.
Ugly yes, unsafe no
I can trade ugly for cheap, anytime. You don't need million dollar concierge dorms and fancy shrubbery and crown moldings in classrooms, and I was happy to not have to pay for them. Unfortunately the "ugly" wasn't maintained for too many years, and became "unsafe" by the mid- to late-1990s.
Classrooms with bursting pipes, collapsing ceilings, no heat. Windowless offices with no ventilation - not no AC, no heat or ventilation at all. Flooring that popped up. Chair users stuck in freight elevators with no panic buttons. Potholled walkways that iced up. Toilets that flushed up ...
Most of this happened because of the larger "general fund" problems that MA still faces with infrastructure. Things got better when the universities were permitted to form foundations that could solicit private donations and put tuition and fees back into the university, not subject to the whims of the legislature that had underfunded and defunded the schools for decades.
UMass Amherst - I don't understand
Even the picture they use of Amherst is nice. What the F is he talking about ugly buildings? Those building could be found somewhere at Harvard. Crack head.
