old or elderly?

Old or elderly? If he's elderly, give the guy a break... probably has a bad hip. Double-park your car and run your groceries up to your apartment and then park your car.
Just wondering...

What's the difference between old and elderly? Is it a matter of degree, or whether you feel like being polite to the subject?

I've been called 'old' at the age of 36, but never 'elderly'.
What utter nonsense

Elderly people with bad hips get both a parking sticker and a space reserved for handicap parking. Everyone else has to battle it out.
The city should institute a large fine for such behavior. It implies intimidation, i.e. park at your own risk of retaliation.
Hey, I know that guy.

How many people have had this exact same protracted discussion, in every city neighborhood? We all think that old guy's a stubborn @$*, pissed about all the new cars in the 'hood. But maybe he's got a heart condition. Or dammit, maybe he's just tired.

Give him a break!
Handicapped Placard?

If he has one, let him be. If he doesn't, explain how he probably is entitled to one. Tell him that if he got one, he could have "his" space enshrined as just for him AND he could park just about anywhere in the city for free!
fill it.

I was thinking something along these lines when I saw this comment at the bottom of the livejournal thread:
"play hardball
fill the barrel with cement
the city department can help him move it."

Well it did snow this morning. Maybe he got out there early and shoveled it out before you even woke up!In all seriousness guys like this are usually jerks. If someone has a handicap, the city will put a handicap sign in front of his house. There is a family in my neighborhood that uses barrels and cones to block off three spaces year round. You could come home in the middle of July and find 3 empty spaces and still have to park 6 houses down because this family tinks they own the street.Of course they have police friends. All of their cars have those stupid little police stickers on them(dont even get me started on those). If you park there chances are somthing will happen to your car. Its one of those big families that still has the alcoholic son in his forties living in the basement and starting fights in the streets at 3 in the morning. Real winners.I usually send an email to the local police, the city of boston transportation department, your city counciler and the mayors office.Put all the email addresses in the send so they all know the others have been informed. It usually forces them to make a move because no one wants to be accused of ignoring, ecspecially if the mayors hotline has been informed.Good luck and watch your back if your gonna just toss and park.

You could look at it as a timesaver - now you don't have to haul your own trash barrels out on Wednesday.
Not after a snow storm?

If its not after a snow storm, and he does it all the time, there's really no justification for it because he can get a handicapped sticker otherwise. Before you do anything, however, I'd go and talk to him to find out what the deal is. If he's a real jerk and doesn't have any good reason for doing it other than to keep you out of "his" space, you won't have to feel so bad calling the city on him whether he's old or not.
So why is he a "geezer"?

So why is he a "geezer"? Would similar epithets about race, gender or "sexual orientation" be accepted as politically correct? But it's o.k. to disparage and riducule on age?

It depends how it's used.

the term "geezer" can be either used affectionately or in a derogatory manner, depending on the situation or situations.
For instance, if somebody is joking around the the word "geezer", or says, affectionatly "He's an old geezer", that's not pejorative.
However, if someone resents or dislikes an older person and says "Why should I have anything to do with that old geezer?", then the term "geezer" is derogatory.

If "geezer" were a pejorative term for old man, it would be emphasized in the sentence instead of "that," which you have boldfaced, and it wouldn't need the modifier "old." In the sentence you use, it means just what it means in other contexts: "guy."
