As GateHouse continues to hover near bankruptcy, local unit loses editors

CommonWealth details the suburban media chain's latest financial filings, which warn of possible bankruptcy but reassure us that should that happen, the top two executives - one of them our own Kirk Davis - will get nice severance packages.

Meanwhile, the list of local editors who have left or are soon to leave includes Managing Editor Kat Powers, Gail Spector at the Newton Tab and Jillian Fennimore at the Somerville Journal. That's in addition to Greg Reibman, streamlined out of his job as local publisher last November.

So what if any newspaper folds - all they print is propaganda for the anti-God power elite

Do they wear brightly colored uniforms?

Kind of a typical anti-God media response. Read the Bible lately? Or ever? Thought not.

Awfully presumptuous today, aren't we? But I'll borrow a phrase from your chapters (I'll do a little presuming of my own and presume you didn't spend your youth in Hebrew School) and turn the other cheek.

Oh, and if I had to choose? I'd be the blue one; I've always been partial to that color.

That's godly of you to turn the other cheek.

My recollection of childhood is hazy. I spent time in something - could have been Hebrew School or Sunday School. But Scripture is Scripture, however you approach it.

You answered your own question - it wasn't Hebrew School.

How on earth do you make it through a day with so many godless heathens breathing your air?

I subscribed to the Roslindale (aka Parkway) Transcript for 20 years, and last year I finally decided I'd had enough. The last straw was when they pulled the editorial page and opinion columns out of the newspaper. Now there are about 2 vaguely interesting news stories, and page after page of "listings," the same weekly roundups of library movies and senior citizen trips. The Transcript was never a very good paper, but Gateway has destroyed almost anything of value. Look up their circulation: as of February 2011, they had 732 readers. What a pathetic company.

732 readers?

Must be subscribers. They distribute more free copies than this, I suspect. I agree that there is not much to read in this anymore.

You're thinking of the Bulletin. You have to pay to subject yourself to the Transcript. 732 sounds about right, since their circulation isn't much than twice that amount for West Roxbury.

There isn't a single local story on this week's front page and there are more ads than copy inside. Inside the front section are two MBTA stories, and one of them is credited to WCVB. There are two full pages of ads and two more pages that are almost all ads with police blotter items and state house press releases fitted in between them. And for that they want $1.50?

Gatehouse is owned by Fortress, the hedge fund, and they will bleed it dry. They will also give the top guys big bonuses until the end. That's why Kurt Davis's favorite song is "Keep on Rocking in the free world" With no regulations he can laugh all the way to the bank.
