DJ Knife reports on getting mugged by kids outside the Stony Brook T stop Monday night:
BAM! The first tween barrels into my lower back and sends me to the sidewalk. "YO WHAT THE FUCK!!!???" The next one comes at me and takes a swing, misses (I think) and suddenly I’m on my feet.
I look up to see a gauntlet of 3 more tweens coming at me, and I run to the sidelines like I'm in the NFL. They miss me and I keep running. Then the last tween at the end of this adolescent thug-line charges at me with a stick. Another swing and a miss.

It's why Neighbors For Neighbors got started - people in Stony Brook were tired of getting mugged on their way home. And every time the weather gets warm, we see the same pattern - group of 2-3 people gang up on someone using a phone. The response is the same: police shrug, say "don't use your phone", and politely suggest that there's no point to taking a report (and indeed, nothing gets recorded unless you INSIST on filing a report. You'll get harangued with questions like "so what do you want to do?" and "if this goes to court, will you testify?", while shooting a doubtful look at you.
Why do they do this? Because discouraging you from filing a police report keeps the crime stats down.
Go through the newspaper archives and you'll see that JP residents put a stop to it one time by getting pepper spray, at (this may be a shock) BPD's suggestion; they actually invited people to get the Firearm Identification Cards at the stationhouses. Now, it's "be a good little defenseless sheep." They'll teach you self defense, but only women (despite the fact that, overwhelmingly, property and violent crime victims are men.)
People have been getting attacked on the bike path for more than a decade - shoved off their bikes and then mugged while dazed and confused. Happened a month or two ago.
Until Boston Police or the State Police patrol SWC more (and in plain clothes), things won't change; it's seen as a nice little shopping market for hoodlums, just a few stops down the orange line, or a short walk from Egleston.
BPD and MSP are more interested in juris-my-dick-tion than anything else...get mugged on the SWC, and you have to wait for 20 minutes for a cop to drive up from the barracks in...Danvers, or something.

First of all, I"m sorry that DJ Knife had an encounter like this.
Perhaps it's because I'm almost a generation older that Mr. Knife, but there were several things that I didn't understand in his full post. Can someone explain or translate for me.
What does “YOYOYOYOYOYO” mean? I'm not sure if I heard someone screaming “YOYOYOYOYOYO” late at night that I would think that someone was in distress or crazy. Perhaps more standard english might be more helpful?
What is a YT? Do they all live in comfortable homes? What aid did the author expect thsm to render as the offending tweens were no longer in the vicinity?
When I was walking at night in JP in the mid-80's when there were a lot fewer people out at night, most folks would not be diverting there attention to anything other than getting to where they are going. I imagine that texting while walking at night might not be a good idea.
Does the poster's web site name, jumptheturnstyle.com reflect behavior, advocacy of a simple edgieness? AS my MBTA fare is about to go up 23%, I might not to go out of my way to someone who uses public services and leaves the tab to others.

I'm older than Mr. Knife as well, but I do usually know how to find a slang translation. Unfortunately, UrbanDictionary.com was not helpful in this instance. The most common translations for YT are young teen and youtube. I'm pretty sure he didn't mean the latter, but based on some of the readers' comments, I don't think it means young teen either, since at least one person implied that DJ Knife was a YT.

If I heard somebody outside late at night screaming, even "YOYOYOYO!", I wouldn't assume that s/he was drugged-out, drunk or crazy at all. I'd assume the worst-case scenario; either there was an assault in progress and the person is screaming for help, or somebody who's being attacked is defending him or herself from the attack, and screaming, partly to put more power and "umph" into their movements in the process of fighting off an attacker or attackers, and also scaring the assailant(s) off in the process, and hopefully, attracting decent residents/passersby in the area who'd at least come out to try to help, or at least see if the victim was okay.

It not just a Boston problem.The Patriot Ledger reports that yesterday an MBTA worker was beaten badly at North Quincy by a group of students. The Ledger further reports that muggings and stabbings are on the rise in and around T stations. The incident was caught on video according to police.

Similar incident happened a couple of years ago on Carolina. Nothing taken; just an opportunity to beat up a man. This and the previous incident may have been gangbanger initiations. The person in the car watching the incident may have been the judge of whether the children actually beat up DJ Knife.
It is sad that no one came to help. When a man was mugged in my street recently several neighbors came out to help. One provided a phone to call the police, others provided support as they could. What was the man who was mugged doing? Carrying groceries.
While texting or talking on the phone effectively waves a flag saying "mug me," I believe that the larger problem is that there are children who want to be in gangs and so have to prove their worth as gangbangers.

It's been/has happened on the DC Metro too. Teens bored and getting kicks from fighting and throwing the vid's online.
Thing bum fights, but now the bums are anyone who looks like an easy target.
I remember warnings from others in Allston/Brookline, especially in the summer. Teens would go around looking for outdoor house parties or backyard gatherings (not necessarily large) and trying to start fights.
