The Boston Licensing Board decides tomorrow on a request from the Burger King on Washington Street in Roslindale to operate its drive-thru 24 hours a day - which a restaurant manager said he still wants to do even though a regional manager told steamed residents he would have the request withdrawn.
The mayor's office and City Councilor Rob Consalvo both opposed the request, saying the small plaza, which also includes a Dunkin' Donuts, a CVS, a Domino's and some offices, has become a hangout for early-morning ne'er-do-wells and litterers and that residents across the street and behind the plaza have made it clear the last thing they want is more of the same. City councilors Felix Arroyo, Steve Murphy and Ayanna Pressley also opposed the idea.
District E-5 also opposes the idea. "There is a lot of illicit activity at night," in the parking lot, the mayor's liaison told the board. Officials said that while it might be unfair to blame the Burger King for that, 24-hour operations would make it more difficult for police to broom people from the lot, because they could get a burger, then claim to be eating it, while now they would have absolutely no reason to be there early in the morning.
A restaurant manager, however, said there's a need for round-the-clock burgers on the busy street and said some stores in Roslindale Square are open late. Roslindale Square is a mile away.
The Burger King currently shuts its dining room at 10, but keeps its drive-through open until 11 - 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Thanks for spotting that! I plugged "Enneking Parkway and Washington Street" as my starting point on Google Maps and got a distance of 2.2 miles - and failed to look at the map or directions, which for some reason thinks Enneking and Washington actually meet on the other side of Turtle Pond.

I'd love to know what stores are open in Rosi square after 10pm on a weeknight or anytime on Sunday or Monday. Rosi needs more "hot spots" but not what the BK can provide.
Um, the convenience store that used to be L'il Peach?

Also, Romano's is open pretty late, at least for Roslindale Square, although I couldn't tell you if that means past 11 (and, hmm, what about Redd's and the Bel Lounge?). But, yeah, Roslindale Square is not exactly a place you go for late-night excitement.

Having people (who might include police, on-duty or off) on the property at all hours would actually HELP the "vagrant" problem, because vagrants don't like being around 'normal' people.
More people around means more people to call 911 if there are problems, more people to witness stuff, etc.
I agree

I agree. I would think having BK open would drive the vagrants away. The BK staff could be on the phone immediately if something suspicious was going on. If people are doing drug deals, having witnesses is not what the criminals want. Crime happens in lonely areas not busy areas!
Now tell the police this

They always seem to oppose businesses staying open later at community meetings. Reps are always saying something like "gotta send everyone home" because you know ... empty streets are so safe.

So they want to protect the villains from competition? I would have thought it was E-5's job to prevent illicit activity, not keep out the b-team.

Eyes on the street obviously breed crime.
We should shut of streetlights too, because if its dark, everyone will stay home, making things safer
Steamed residents?

Maybe they wouldn't be so steamed if they had 24/7 access to delicious Steamed Hams from BK?
For those wondering, Steamed Hams is taken from a regional dialect... Upstate New York... Albany.
Roslindalians will have to go elsewhere for 3 a.m. burgers
