Seems there's a state law that gives a church a say over any restaurant within 500 feet that serves alcohol if it's "detrimental to the educational and spiritual activities" of the church, and a priest in Quincy has decided a restaurant that features waitresses in kilts and plaid bras is detrimental to his church's mission, the Quincy Patriot Ledger reports. In fact, the Patriot Ledger reports, the restaurant would be detrimental to the entire city.
The proposed eatery would replace a failed Outback, whose bloomin' onions did not offend the church.
The city licensing board could approve the liquor license even over the church's objections. In a decision involving Grendel's Den in Cambridge, the US Supreme Court overturned a state law that let churches block liquor licenses within 500 feet of their property as a violation of the First Amendment's separation of church and state.

Notified the cemetery?

I'm curious how you notify a cemetery (which is right next to the church) without telling the church that runs the cemetery.
Fair enough...

As long as I can block churches coming into my neighborhood if I feel they will interfere with my heathen ways.

Do the right thing, Quincy. Tell 'em to pound sand. And remind them of "glass houses."

Wow. The anti-Catholic jokes

Wow. The anti-Catholic jokes are a bit tired, no? There are many more honorable priests than abusers. I am a practicing Catholic, and while I do think that the church tends to have very skewed priorities sometimes, there is no need to make light of the abuse crisis when discussing an issue like this one. Just my $0.02.

When your church starts allowing the extradition of the bishops and cardinals who swept this all under the rug years ago, I'll stop mocking Catholics. Kay?
Why is that law still on the books?

Clearly unenforceable, it was ruled unconstitutional.
And of course, the clueless reporter at the Patriot Ledger didn't even note that.

Isn't there another south shore business under scrutiny for hiring only pretty young girls?

The investigation of Mary Lou's is federal. The AG's office isn't involved.
